Fun, Well Made, Brutal Progress Reset

Great card art. Fun narrative and events. Good music. I enjoyed the high number of possible interactions between you characters/items and locations with a bunch of unexpected results off the beaten path. A few minor nitpicks in that some of the narrator's lines are repeated often enough to be repetative and sometimes the regions/missions auto-complete before you've had time to fully explore. Some of the locations and items appear in multiple missions (often back to back) and will usually serve a major purpose in one of those missions but not the other (example: fireworks, cultist ship flag, chef). As a result those items/characters/locations seem out of place. Puzzle red herrings? With everything above, I would give this game 5 stars. The reason why I'm giving it 3 is because of a hard failure and reset to the narrative that can happen near the end of the game if you don't complete the missions fast enough/in a correct order. My current playtime is 8h49m and this reset wiped out atleast 8 hours of progress. I've enjoyed the missions and the narrative and would maybe have played through again at a later date after finishing the whole narrative. However, at this point, I don't have the desire to redo 8 hours of missions nevermind the possibility for another failure/reset; even with trying other paths. To elaborate, there is a number of missions before failure for each of catastrophic major events in the narrative. I was nearing the end of chapter three when the maelstrom catastrophy triggered and I was completely reset to the beginning of the game (minus the tutorial mission). Thinking back I can't think of a single "optional"/"redundant' mission I did. Maybe there is a series of events/missions that gives more time? Maybe the first catastrophy (having to do with Leo) was optional? Ultimately, I really enjoyed the game up until it decided to hard reset 8 hours of progress. Consequence of the game being designed as a rogue-like at one point in it's development?

Great Game, Too Much Replay

Despite not normally being one for card games I absolutely adored this one. The writing is sharp and funny, the characters are entertaining and I found the contextual use of cards to solve puzzles an exceptionally clever premise. The order in which you complete missions (and how you solve events inside those missions) determine how the story will branch and progress. If you played games like Stories: Path of Destinies or Omensight, think that. However, perhaps because of my ambivalence to the genre, there were also issues, some worse than others. The game's missions take a while- your average mission takes place across multiple zones (think: checkpoints) and requires +45 minutes to play through, which can be a big ask, especially since the game will not save your position if you need to quit playing, it will reset you to the last checkpoint. And if you fail the objective that mission? Hard reset for the whole mission, checkpoints be damned. Most of the game is not difficult (except towards the end) and you can bumble your way through, however losing an hour of progress and having to replay the parts you already "won" stings. There are also (hidden) objectives you can complete in these missions that will affect subsequent zones, which you can miss by sheer chance, not having even know them to exist. All of those were frustrating, but the fun of the writing and solving the card puzzle was enough to carry me through. Then I got an ending and saw how you're expected to 'solve' the game and just no. In short, you are expected to (re)play an entire path, even those missions already solved, with the sole concession that you can now undo one mission. As much as I love this game, unless the developer puts in the ability to entirely skip already-finished missions (with maybe a marker if a hidden objective was missed, so you know there's a reason to replay it) I fear I'll never see the end to the story. Which saddens me.

Superb art, fun story, and good gameplay

Quite the fun little card game with bits of deckbuilding (but unlike games such as Slay the Spire/Monster Train) and some choose-your-own-adventure-style story progress. Considering practically most of the story is presented via small dialogue boxes, it's actually fairly well written and pretty funny at times. The narrator (only voiced "character") is quite enjoyable, too, although some of his non-story quips become somewhat repetitive after a while. The card art is gorgeous and they did a superb job at imitating ye olde Disney's Robin Hood's style. I also failed my first run (of 9.5 hours) which very much seems to be an intentional game mechanic - I was stumbling a bit here and there throughout the run as I was still figuring out new things as I was nearing my inevitable doom. Unlike a previous reviewer though, I don't view that actually as a bad thing since due to its branched-story nature I will now get to play so many of the other missions I missed the first time around and likely with a somewhat different character/card selection as well. Lastly, I like that the combat most of the time does not actually need to be a fight to the death as the game lets me bribe, bedazzle, or intimidate opponents if I have enough points for each. It's definitely doing its own thing rather than being one of the usual card games that are made by other indies, and I'm looking forward to my second run.

Much more than I expected.

The game is quirky, charming and MUCH more innovative than I had initially expected. It brought me a feeling of nostalgia, like watching a new spin on the "80s cartoon" trope bringing the same old goofiness, the same quirkiness, and the same somewhat political messages - but without feeling dumb or forced. Gameplay is fun, story is surprisingly mature despite the cartoonish presentation, and the characters are generally charming. I feel that in a different era, Volepain would be a classic and iconic character we'd all know and love. Regardless though; GREAT game. I have nothing but compliments. My only critic would be that enemy variety is incredibly limited, but that doesn't (much) detract from the overall experience; this is a phenomenal card-based, choice-matters type of game!

Great Storytelling Game

I can just really recommend it to start your gaming day! It is exactly what I was looking for - a mixture of a Card Game (NOT like Slay the SPire which I enjoed very much) and some storytelling. Devs put really detail and love into the game! Calm, atmospheric and interesting. Really something to play on a Sunday to just relax and more importantly enjoy.
