Good game design, ruined by bad coding
The game mechanics and story (what I saw of them) are fairly solid, but I've not seen a game this inexcusably buggy since Daggerfall. This is even worse, though, because while Daggerfall fell afoul of pressing too hard on the bleeding edge of the technology of the time, this is failing at something that was being done pretty consistently reliably 20 years ago, and with the limited resources of 20-years-older hardware. Full application crashes happened several times, and the game falling non-responsive, forcing me to kill the process from the system monitor, was a constant occurance, having done so literally dozens of times in a game that, according to the savefile timestamps, I had only been at for 3.3 hours when I gave up on it.

Mediocre at best
Although i really tried, i didnt get any entertainment out of this title: Graphics are dated, progress is slow, battles are shallow, controls are clunky... All in all, there just isnt anything special about this title, nothing that would have kept me playing...

Pointless
A poor game. The game mechanics are extremely sloppy. You spend more time resting and reloading and reloading and reloading because your character rarely hits anything. This isn't my 10th RPG but my 12th, so I know how to build efficient characters. With 7 points on Sword, 23 on STR, END, SPD & DEX, should be close to a tank, but couldn't fight a barrel let alone other opponents. Resting is excruitatingly frustrating. You're bleeding out, you rest for two minutes and then get ambushed, making the resting system close to redundant. Once or twice isn't so bad but it happens *every* *single* *time*. and it's so slow as well There's barely any gold in the game yet the merchants charge top fare for low quality items. What topped off this negative experince is the corrupted save. After 24hours of gameplay, the save corrupted. This game has potential but it is such a frustrating grind, I unistalled with heavy disappointment. The only upside is: it's free and that's a good thing because no-one should waste money on this trash. The laughable thing is: the developer accused Diablo of being the slip in RPGs. Strange how such an inexperienced developer that releases a rough idea as a finished product slates one of the best RPGs to date. Stay away from these cowboys.

Too much, too little. Contrasts.
Eschalon is a game of too much, and yet too little. There are too many stats & skills; and yet the world is absurdly little. Even older games gave you bigger DEMOs than all of Eschalon. There are many monsters, yet so little you can do. A massive variety of items, when you'll at most use 5. The same is said of most aspects of the game. Too many buttons, too many spells, just a massive list of redundancies to make it feel more "old school" before we collectively realized Sticks to Snakes is useless. Eschalon Book I was a bad start, and nothing really improves over the series, the UI just gets different shades lacquered onto it. The game has a lot of tools and items, and in spite of this, even after throwing my character into an editor and cranking up the numbers to absurd extremes, the character didn't feel powerful, nor did the gameplay become compelling. Even looking into the absurd number of self imposed challenges doesn't actually provide challenge, as many of them simply boil down to, "Do X and strictly X" or "Don't do X", such as "Don't Fast Travel". In a game world as small as Eschalon, this is not a challenge, this is an arbitrary restriction since the game is strictly linear. By the way, it was space aliens all along. There, I saved you three games of uncompelling gameplay.
