Still good despite riding the 3D trend

I do love Monkey Island, fell in love with it since the first one and that appreciation never went away. I remember when this one came out we were pretty disheartened that it followed the new trend of making every game in 3D. Even back then the graphics were kinda disappointing and controls sure took some time to get used to. However, once you give this game a chance you will find what you are looking for buried under the clumsy controls and blocky 3D models. The cartoony atmosphere actually works but what really shines, in my opinion, is the soundtrack by Michael Z.Land - very strong themes and some of the best tracks in all of the series. The magic of the Monkey Island world is here, a bit stiffer than usual, but it's there with the usual charm and witty humour. I doubt any of you who have never played a Monkey Island game will start with this one. It doesn't make any sense anyway. But if you enjoyed the other games and somehow missed this one - get it! You will not regret spending time on Guybrush Threepwood and co. !

Dissapointing

I played this the first time when it came out in 2000. Being a Monkey Island fan I was very excited to play this but I ended up being very dissapointed. The 3d graphics are quite bad and make playability very difficult and annoying at times. Some of the puzzles make no sense and the humour and dialogues are not as good as in the previous editions. I will buy it for the nostalgia when it goes on sale but unless you are a hardcore Monkey Island fan I would avoid this one.

Feels like a bad knock-off

The game lacks, most everything that makes a Monkey Island games good. Terrible controls, awful 3D graphics, even for the time, and just generally lacking any of the fun that the other titles have. I didn't complete the game because it felt like a chore from the get-go and just got worse. Honestly, avoid this game unless you have some masochistic nostalgia.

Bilan en demi-teinte...

Le style dessin animé du précédent épisode ayant été laissé de côté, nous avons maintenant des graphismes plus "réalistes". Les environnements ne font pas laids, bien au contraire mais les modèles des personnages... C'est une autre histoire ! En plus d'avoir mal vieillis, ils sont pauvrement animés et très peu expressifs. Les musiques sont peut-être moins bonnes mais la VF reste encore une fois de qualité. En terme de scénario, ce n'est pas mauvais et c'est toujours aussi amusant. Les énigmes sont plus difficiles vers la fin, surtout le fameux "Monkey Kombat" : ce n'est guère compréhensible au premier abord et ça risque de déstabiliser beaucoup de monde puisqu'ils faut VRAIMENT s'investir pour trouver comment réussir. Avec le recul, c'est pas mal, y'a de l'idée ! Par contre, je ne pardonne pas la jouabilité ATROCE qui mettra les nerfs à rude épreuve ! Guybrush se contrôle non plus à la souris mais aux flèches ! Il n'est d'ailleurs pas possible de configurer les touches pour jouer dans des conditions normales ! J'insiste vraiment sur ce défaut qui peut s'avérer FATAL pour les joueurs peu patient ! Quel plaisir de voir le protagoniste partir dans une direction totalement opposée à là où on veut aller ! Frôler une porte vous fera entrer automatiquement et quelle joie d'arriver encore une fois dans la prison parce que je ne suis pas passé assez loin de l'accès ! Et ne parlons pas de l'interface ! Pas possible d'utiliser la souris pour naviguer dans les menus ! La raison ? Portage sur console. Le jeu ayant été développé dans cette perceptive, il n'est pas du tout adapté pour le PC ! Les seuls personnes qui trouveront du plaisir à cette aventure sont celles qui ont déjà un pied dans l'univers de Monkey Island. Si c'est le premier jeu pour quelqu'un qui découvrir la série, ça le fera fuir et je comprends parfaitement. A réserver aux fans !

Worst Monkey Island, but still awesome

Escape from Monkey Island is very much the King's Quest 7 of Monkey Island: people were very negative towards it at launch but defenders arouse quickly later on. Today the fan base is pretty evenly divided between people who like it and people who hate it. I am very much in the former camp. Escape from Monkey Island has a bit of everything that made the games before it great: the puzzle design is good and tough without being too unreasonable (most of the time), the story is as silly as usual and has some good twists along the way, and the humor is still excellent. I daresay this is the game where Guybrush is at his funniest, with a great mixture of his childishness and snakiness. The clunky 3D graphics are also oddly charming, much like Grim Fandango. However, it seems like all the flaws of the previous Monkey Island games have come along for the ride as well! When a puzzle isn't fun it is nastily obtuse, the game often isn't good at telling you what you have to do next, some of the humor relies too much on references, and the Minigame-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named is a farcry from the Insult Swordfighting from the previous game. Some of the voice acting also surprisingly subpar and even some cutscenes fall flat due to the limited animation. All that said though, In the end I think the game's numerous fun moments outweighs the various bad moments. Also this game may very well have the best soundtrack in all the series. Also of note is that the game got a PS2 release that is actually very solid! If you ever see it at a trading store at reasonable price, I would recommend picking it up. The game actually seems to control better with a Playstation controller then what you are given with the PC release. Is Escape From Monkey Island the worst Monkey Island game? Yes. However, saying it is the worst Monkey Island game is like saying one amazing meal made by a master chef isn't as good as his other delicious meals: it is the worst of the bunch, but it's still well-made and delicious
