Description
Evil is afoot in Menhir Forest. The druids, the caretakers of the woods, are troubled: their archdruid has disappeared under deeply suspicious circumstances, and a cancerous growth of purple cysts is spreading, carrying corruption and sickness wherever they appear. It takes a special kind of hero to save the day. Or maybe more than one.

Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is a labor of love from the co-creators of the critically acclaimed Legend of Grimrock series. Druidstone is a tactical, single-player, turn-based roleplaying game, which combines the best qualities of modern RPGs with the elegance of tactical boardgames. Every action, every turn counts as you control your party of heroes through handcrafted, challenging missions with varying, and often surprising, objectives.

Set in a unique fantasy world, Druidstone is filled with ancient lush forests, standing stones, snow-topped mountains, deadly creatures and puzzle-ridden ruins. And somewhere in the middle of all of this, caught in the flow of events, are Aava, the archdruid's daughter, who must now shoulder his responsibilities, Leonhard, a warden with a mysterious past and a lethal destiny, and Oiko, the failed Red Priest who is living proof that one may be very smart without being particularly wise. Along the way, they meet companions and villains, whose unique personalities and abilities make every encounter memorable.

Key Features

  • A tactical turn-based and tile-based battle system where every action and every turn counts.
  • Upgrade the abilities of your heroes – your upgrade choices have a dramatic impact on the characters' capabilities!

  • A gripping, fantastic story of love, death and responsibility centered around the main characters of Aava, Leonhard and Oiko.
  • A unique fantasy setting that combines the best elements from western RPGs, JRPGs and tactical boardgames in unexpected ways.

Just completed the game

I bought this game because it was created by the same guys as the Legend of Grimrock, so I was expecting quality, and that was indeed what I got. You could look at the game like huge puzzle but, unlike in Grimrock, there's multiple solutions to each level, with varying degrees of quality. Getting always "top marks" is very hard, in my opinion, especially if you try to beat these in your first try. There's often little room for mistakes, so every move has to be carefully laid out. Although, you can often replay the level in the same way, and get similar results, so there isn't much randomness. I played on normal, and had to often reset levels. It is worth it to complete the optional objectives, as you are rewarded with much required level ups, gems and new weapons for your characters. Interspersed, there are a few pure puzzle levels that are, in my opinion, quite easy in comparison, but are still fun to solve. In time you learn the more effective strategies and spells, but the game also ups the difficulty to match, especially when you want to achieve every optional objective on every level. There is a gradual increase in difficulty, but, IMO, there's quite a few spikes and dips in difficulty. Altough, there were levels that could be beaten, or made much easier, by employing non-traditional techniques. Sometimes you might be stuck in a level for tens of minutes, and the music can get a bit grating, but I found the soundtrack to be good, and a bit of an earworm. In this line of thought, the game tries to punish turtling by summoning extra monsters, or adding time limits, so you always have to be on your toes. I have seen several criticisms of the game's story. I'm not sure if I agree. I found it to be cute and charming. Not overly complicated, very straightforward, did not get in the way of the action. It also didn't leave a horrible cliffhanger to tease a sequel; it's self contained. In short, I had a phenomenal time playing it, and would recommend it.

Frustrating

I admittedly did not get too far into this game before it completely put me off. Should have seen the hint when the tutorial level was already difficult to do the optional objective before entering the next mission where there is an annoying time limit. Have had several attempts at it, even turned it to easy for one attempt and I just run out of time. Does not even get me engaged into the gameplay or story or anything, a big hurdle out the gate and reading around does not seem to get anymore enjoyable after. Wish I had checked it out a bit more first, but just saw a turned based game and thought it seemed interesting. I am sure it may be fun for some people out there, but maybe if it had a tough level a few hours in after pulling me into the gameplay loop first I would have tried to persevere to get through but throwing that 5 minutes into the game? Sorry, but not thanks, not my style of game.

Warning to anyone wanting to buy it.

The game feels great, but it have some major red flags. 1: If you don't like being rushed, just skip this game entirely. In most scenarios you will be forced to rush. 2: Play using a no-break. If your pc shuts down/reboot/turnoff for any reason, you lose everything you played in the active scenario; even if you "saved and exited" the game to create a save point. 3: The game has level ups and things to buy, but farming past scenarios is highly penalized. Too many people say the game is like this or it would be too easy/unbalanced yada yada. No matter the argument, these people forgot this is an offline single player game and none should be dictated on how to have fun. It would hurt none that is already having fun to have the OPTION to save the game properly, have a zero-rush mode on easy and let you farm early levels if you want to get better before progress.

Consistiently high quality

This is an excellent turn based tactics game. Abilities are easy to understand and do what they say on the tin. The scope of the game is just right - it's not enormous but what is there is very satisfying for the developer's "15-20 hours" of content. It took me just a few minutes past 20 hours to do all the missions on normal with all the secondary objectives completed. The dialogue and characterization is also excellent, and there is enough of it to make you care about why you are doing each mission. The characters are witty with interesting personalities. The world building leaves something to be desired. The world feels expansive, but the wider world is only referred to obliquely in the dialogue, leaving the player to guess at the details. However, there is not really room within the scale of the game to have given more backround information. I have no complaints about the graphics, although they don't particularly stand out overall. The color palette was pleasantlny bright. The final couple missions were exceptionally attractive; my wife walked in on the final boss stage and said only, "ooh, that's pretty". I'm glad that the whole game was not so visually busy though - it helped give the finish the right degree of pop. I did not run into any significant bugs or technical issues. The game ran smoothly on my machine. There was one instance where a dialogue line went off the right hand side of the screen at 4k resolution and the halbert takes 2 hands to wield even with the perk that makes 2h weapons wieldable in 1h. Pacing was even and difficulty ramp was well matched to power ramp. Overall, I say the game is of consistiently high quality with no major (or even middling) flaws.

A Beautiful Blend of Genres and Ideas

It doesn't happen that often that developers throw a lot of themes, genres, gameplay elements, and ideas into the cauldron and the result is not an indigestable mess but a game as delicious as Druidstone. It's a thing of beauty. It has beautiful graphics, beautiful music, the plot includes some very original ideas, and - best of all - it is beautifully balanced and has beautifully crafted missions with polished gameplay. On the one hand, every turn matters, and you often think, "Oh, this has just cost me the battle, I should have done X instead." On the other hand, most missions have multiple ways to victory, based on which skills you'll decide to use. The story includes a fantasy setting in a parallel universe, druids, an evil Sorceress, and an old technologically advanced race that seems to have escaped from a sci-fi novel. Characters? There's the Archdruid's daughter, a strange being called Oiko, the Warden - a human-like creature created by the Menhir Forest itself when in danger, a Japanese-speaking karate girl (no kidding), conscious stones, minor deities, mail-delivering intelligent birds, a spacetime demon... And it all just works. The gameplay is a perfectly working mixture of turn-based strategy, RPG, a puzzle game, and a card game. You level up your characters, which earns them new spells to learn. The number of times they can use the spells during a mission and their strength are determined by allocating gems you get for reaching the missions' objectives (some mandatory, some optional). And while some missions are about careful planning and outsmarting the enemy, others are more like puzzles where once you understand the main idea, you'll just do the trick and win. Add a big dose of humor, music ranging from lyrical to monumental string action to a tribute to arcade game tunes, throw in some pop-cultural (rather game-cultural) references, shake, then stir, and you'll get Druidstone, a game I spent 110 hours with - and don't regret a single minute.
