Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients
Description
Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.

Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.

In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

  • Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
  • Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
  • Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
  • Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
  • Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
  • Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
  • Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

Have Dreadnought, Will Travel

Drox Operative is, at its very core, a complete melding of gameplay ideas, mechanics and concepts taken from both Din's Curse and Depths of Peril, and skinned in the trappings of a space combat RPG like Escape Velocity or Elite. The combat is much faster paced than any of Soldak's earlier games, and in my opinion, it's much more brutal and unforgiving -- if you're not careful, you can easily find yourself outnumbered and outclassed by huge swarms of ships Hell-bent on taking you down. As with Soldak's earlier games, Drox Operative excels at making you feel like you're part of a dynamic, shifting universe -- while your action (or inaction, or tardiness) has significant effects on the game world, there's a whole lot of other stuff happening in the background. Wars can break out and be resolved, famines, or plagues can wipe out whole races, or a nasty rebellion can lead to new subfactions arising. You constantly need to pay attention to what is going on, lest you find yourself inadvertently on the losing side of a battle you thought you'd all but won. But then again, there's nothing stopping you from just switching sides on a whim -- especially if the Other Side is offering you tons of cash. And yes, as with earlier games, Drox Operative leads itself to massive, excessive, almost frustrating levels of grind, as you build your ship up to the point where you can fight to get decent levels of XP out of the enemies, later in the game. If you love space RPGs, don't mind grinding, or love CRPGs, you owe it to yourself to at least try Drox Operative (Soldak has a demo on their website). For fans of Soldak's games (who don't already own it), it's a must-buy.

Adequate reskin

If you've played a Soldak game before you've played this game before. If you haven't, I recommend the Depths of Peril and associated high-fantasy universe games first. If you *love* 2d space shooters and have already beaten Transcendence, Star Control 2 (The Ur Quan Masters), RingRunner (Flight of the Sages), and their ilk then this game is probably worth a go. For my money though the amount of time needed for one of the Soldak games isn't justified in this instance. It maintains the grind of Depths of Peril without having the storytelling / exploratory reward system. And since everything in these games is slowly falling apart when you're not saving the day, having the player take on the role of an apathetic mercenary is unrewarding. Once more - it's a decent game that doesn't do anything it's excellent predecessor didn't already do, and falls flat in a few places where that game shines.

Intriguing first, boring last

I purchased it on Gamersgate some time ago. it was the first Soldak game I played and I was hooked with reviews that titled it "Diablo-in-space". It's NOT Diablo-in-space. It's NOT Space rangers. It's all the same Soldak game they made in different wrappings, be it fantasy-shaped in Din's Curse and Kivi's Underworld, or in scifi-shaped just like in DROX game. Evolving living world, much of diplomacy and much of balancing your relations with factions. Variety of loot and items, good sound effects, useful and handy help and tutorial system... It seems that everything is fine in this game... But it becomes boring very soon, I don't know why. I'm a big fan of space games, and the bland blackish void of cosmic space doesn't make me sleep at the monitor :), so it's not the visual part of DROX that causes this boring feel. It lacks something elusive that I can't name right away. This world is elaborate and enough well-crafted but it DOESN'T SUCK YOU IN, it remains FLAT, colorful and bleepy-bloopy with laser rays - BUT FLAT! I never was capable to play it more than an hour. Blizzard made this casino-like competition with the random number generator much more immersive and intriguing than Soldak did. Space Rangers had brilliant quest system - that Soldak game has not. It's more or less monotonous bang-bang-kill-them-all-and-sell-the-loot gameplay diluted with some not very enjoyable diplomatic exercises. So, if you played one of Soldak games - you played them all. If you didn't - try it and decide by yourself, do you like it or not.

Fresh and fun at first. Repetitive later

I got excited when I first heard about Drox. Reviews were positive - the concept of living world where your action and inaction both count is interesting, RPG in space sounds great to me too. I was expecting I will put in at the very least 50-70 hours and when I started it seemed Drox will deliver for me. It is definitely worth a try if you haven't tried other Soldak games before and don't know their formula for ARPGs. The problem is - it's too repetitive after a while. The available mechanics seem robust at first, but they started to bore me after 15hours. all in all I put 20 hours into the game and don't really plan going back. Still, it was a time good spent, so grab Drox at discount I would say.

Good for a while

This game lacks the variety necessary to keep it going. No dungeons (well, technically the "secret wormholes" count as dungeons in the game code) and no really fancy stuff to keep your interest. What this game has going for it is that it will run on basically any hardware you have, so long as it runs Windows, Mac, or Linux. You got a toaster that runs Linux? This game will probably run on that. The diplomacy is very basic, and I have to say that I only ever play on Medium maps at the largest, because anything bigger is just a grindfest. The worst grind is when you are at war with a race of aliens. It gets old after destroying the second or third planet. I'm sorry.
