Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients
Description
Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.

Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.

In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

  • Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
  • Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
  • Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
  • Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
  • Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
  • Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
  • Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

Not Soldak's strongest game, but still good

My first experience with Soldak games was with Depths of Peril, followed by Din's Curse. I implore you to try those fantastic games out even if you don't end up buying Drox. As in all Soldak games, Drox builds on the foundation of the previous games, while mixing up the formula. The dynamic quest system is clearly the best and most unique part of Soldak games, and here it's used for a more mundane purpose: races have quests that need to be done for them, or they'll suffer consequences. The main problem is that you don't care about any specific race -- you're just a mercenary for hire. This works well in some games, but here, there isn't enough to interest you if you don't have a vested interest in one of the factions. I will say that the faction system is done very well here. Each race is trying to win, and you can play races against each other. If a race declares war on you, your allies will be dragged into war, and that can easily cause a huge galactic war. You can also be dragged into war by one of your allies. This makes the relationship system very cool, though a dominant strategy in the game is often to suck up to the strongest race. The game has multiple victory conditions like Civilization, but I feel like this hurts the gameplay in this case since it's not a 4X. It makes you just find the shortest path to victory, rather than giving you a challenge. Another difference from previous games is that your items determine your skills. This is really good in that you gain new skills over time, rather than keep the same skills forever. Inventory management is complex, as your ship has limitations set by skills, space, and power. The downside of this approach is that there are just too many items (given that this is an ARPG) and it's too much work to keep calculating if an item is better than your current items. All in all, this is a fresh take on a genre that is at least interesting, even if it's not my favorite. Regardless, I think many people will enjoy it.

Too much grinding

I've taken some time to play this game when I purchased it. The controls are actually great and it is an enjoyable experience to do space battles in Drox Operative. The game play got very repetitive however and I set it aside. I've yet again decided to give it another go a few months later and the grinding is about where the fun starts and stops at the same time. The progression and ultimate goal revolves too much around levelling your space ship to the maximum level. Don't get me wrong, there are some other goals, but these quickly become overshadowed by grinding the insane influx of vanilla flavoured quests available to the Drox Operative. Simply put, if this was reality it would be a madhouse. There simply too much to do that is quite the same actions over and over and that is up to a level where it is repulsive. In short, nice controls, simple gameplay, but it's just too much to keep hooked.

Space Diablo

This game is a love letter for the randomness, chaos. Everything, including the story lines and happenings are generated at the moment when you start a new sector. When I say story, it isn't that deep and beautiful RPG story that you may know from the genre's great titles. The main goal is satisfying the Drox Guild's demands about anything they may ask. While it can be set to only minimal interaction during sector generation, it can't be disabled. Whenever these quest shows up there is no way back and you have to complete it in order to prevent a sector lose. However there are more times when the Drox Guild doesn't ask anything and you can move at your own pace, and the real fun starts here. You're absolutely free to do absolutely anything. Trade for gold, buy coordinates for new locations for better trade routes. Take diplomatic route to make peace in the universe. Even the brutal fighting can be done in different ways. Use that diplomatic connections to make factions attack each other, or support only the strongest. You may also fight the so called "Ancients", the super strong -better than boss- level NPCs to become living legend. There are countles way to achive the win, up to you which one will be the one true way. This freedom also applies to you character development. The different starting and sub-races have different attributes and special slots. However to start with your ship has nothing from its own, not even basic attack. You can equip components in 3 different slot-types: heavy, medium, light. Same equipments may be found for these, but of course the heavier is more effective at the cost of harder maintain. There are tons of different equipments ranging from lasers to crews, even hangar bays to spawn friendly NPCs. The only limit is the powerload and you have to increase the powersupply to make better items work in order. For more hardpoints you can increase your ship command capacity which however decrease the base efficiency.

Quite enjoyable...

If you took the best of Star Control's spaceship combat and merged it with the ship-building/diplomacy/exploration features of Master of Orion, then added character-levelling, inventory, and quest systems on top of that, you'd have this game. In other words, something a bit old-school and positively brimming with fun. :)
