DOOM 3

DOOM3 and it's expansions could have been a system shock clone. They do dark and scary well; the lighting and shadows provide a frightening atmosphere. The space colony's very extensive dark deserted and claustrophobic corridors, crawling with demons and zombiefied humans are reminiscent of the ss series space station/space ship. On the otherhand, there is not anywhere near the interaction, depth and sophistication of the ss series. The whole evil coterie returns, but instead of the hordes, you're ambushed at every opportunity by usually a few at a time. It's still an action game at heart, albeit a frightening one. Survival horror it's not. There's plenty of guns and ammo to deal with the denizens of doom. The production values are very high, & although it is a typical old school shooter, it feels like a real industrial base in a remore, hostile location. The two expansions take place in the same location and similar environments to DOOM3; pretty much extensions of the first game. RoE brings the story to a close and introduces a bit more depth and variety to the gameplay. It is however easier than the first game. The lost missions is far more balls-to-the wall than RoE and DOOM3. Monsters spawn often and everywhere. Armour, ammo & health pickups are less numerous than in both preceding games, although there is still more than enough. Be prepared for many jump-scares and some frantic multiple-enemy encounters. The original Doom3 is darker and far more scarier, exacerbated by having to switch between weapon and flashlight. BFG is definitely lighter, has more pickups, enables simultaneous weapon and flashlight use. No doubt it was altered to appeal to a more mainstream audience. If you want the full original experience, get the original game or play with settings and install mods to get BFG to approach the original look, feel and gameplay.On the other hand, BFG contains a hell (ahem) of a lot of value, upgraded graphics and is the most accessible DOOM3.

Here are the problems I've encountered and the solution. TLDR: Just install original Doom III and DHEW3 source port. Follow the instructions in DHEW3 (copy the pk3s from the original game). Download Lost Mission from moddb (expansion from BFG). I've started from Doom III BFG, because it is newer and has additional expansion so I thought it might be better. It launches without problems, but in the game the mouse is not moving the gun. It seems it's impossible to bind mouse movement to "look up", "look down", "turn left", "turn right". I've read it's a console port and maybe that's the reason. I've tried various fixes I've found somewhere like deleting joy config files and renaming the exe. But no such workaround worked for me. I know that classic DOOM had such controls originally (moving the gun with arrow keys), but even DOOM I/II can be played with a mouse without a problem and it's just more comfortable. I've tried alternative engine RBDOOM, but it didn't help either. Nothing I've tried fixed the problem of not having a "free look". After not being able to play Doom III BFG with a mouse. I've tried original Doom III. It's considered a better version by the community, because it's not a console port and has better moddability. It comes with Resurrection of Evil expansion and the last patch - 1.3.1 which is exactly what we need if we want to play with mods. The Lost Mission expansion which was exclusive to Doom III BFG has been ported to this version as a mod which is available on moddb, so it seems like there is nothing lost if we aren't able to make BFG work like in my case. With the mod we have all 3 campaigns and the original has no content cut from it. Thanks to mods we can enhance the game so it looks and plays better than BFG. But it didn't come without it's own issues on my system: When I first launched the game it asked me for a CD key, but I couldn't do anything. Mouse didn't work and menu can't be controlled with a keyboard. I needed to edit the key manually outside the game. The files are base/doomkey for Doom III and base/xpkey for ROE. The keys are in our library on GOG under Doom III -> More -> Serial. I just inserted the serials on first line of these files. After launching the game next time there was no prompt for a key. The second problem is that even then I still couldn't use the mouse in the menu. It was stuck in upper left corner of the screen and didn't respond to any movement of the mouse. It looks like it's very common issue, because there are many posts on various forums, Steam etc. I've tried some of the fixes that people recommended but they didn't work. Finally I've tried from scratch with a source port that people recommended called DHEW3 and it fixed the problem with mouse stuck in the corner in menu and freelook in the game so finally it is playable. DHEW3 is the definite way to play the game. It apparently fixes many issues in original game. It actually works even on my stubborn Windows 10 system and is compatible with mods so there is no reason not to use it. It just works.

Doom 3 est, on peu le dire, l'enfant mal aimé de la famille des Doom. Beaucoup de joueurs s'accordent à dire que Doom 64 est le veritable Doom 3. D'un coté je suis assez d'accord, de l'autre je trouve que ce Doom 3 apporte un gros "+" à l'expérience Doom. Une ambiance horreur malsaine, des graphismes révolutionnaire pour l'epoque ( si comme moi vous voulez les mettre au gout du jour jouer avec un mod, il ya pas mal de mod HD qui valent le détour sur internet ) et on peu le dire un semblant de scénario totalement cliché mais qui fait le taff. De toute façon on ne joue pas à Doom pour son scénario mais pour le fun. Donc je trouve cette petite compil très bonne, franchement c'est à faire, en plus avec le nombre de mods qu'il ya sur internet vous pourrez ameliorer grandement votre expérience. Et si le jeu est en promo et que ne vous l'avez pas, foncez, franchement c'est du tout bon ! Bon jeu à vous !

Absolutely fantastic game. Great mods for the original. What can I say GREAT GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Severely underrated and misunderstood. Doom 3 BFG is an atmospheric action game where the meta is in GOING fast, not slow. The beefy feeling shotgun, maybe the best FEELING shotgun in FPS, is a rushdown melee weapon. Where sprinting from enemy spawn to enemy spawn firing at their crotch, point blank, as fast as you can, IS the way to play. Still tons o fun. BFG Edition also has my current favorite version of Doom (1993).
