DOOM 3

The game was ahead of its time, and I believe it still holds up today. Expect an FPS horror game, and it will not disappoint. Don't play it right after any of the newer Dooms expecting a similar experience, because it will feel slow and dated. The platforming can be a little finicky and frustrating some times, especially for the completionist that wants to explore every nook and cranny. As a game, for the time, I think it is really great. I personally don't have a strong opinion regarding the vanilla vs BFG edition. Just pick one, and enjoy it.

Others have written really elaborate and thorough reviews so I don't need to. It's simply a good fast space horror shooter with a great atmosphere, so get it on sale and prepare for a few scares - and a few cheap jump scares - but it is fun and THAT is all that matters. I bought it on CD when it came out and later on Steam, so I just had to get it on GOG because I just love the freedom of not having any DRM software all over it. Yes it is showing it's age a little today, but with the computer power that everyone now has it will run with full specs as smooth and as fast as you like. P.S. The BFG version is just a more refined and polished version of the original, you get both so you can choose which one you like, the original has Mod's so you can try both and play the way you want.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game when it released. Over the years, though the graphics have aged, it's still a classic horror game that plays smoothly and has a building sense of dread and realism that the more recent games lack. Where the current games are arcade-like and filled with silly bonuses and cartoony effects, this game is more of a first-person version of Dead Space. Pros - Still impressive graphics and lighting model as well as a silky smooth frame-rate (particularly in the BFG edition which has improved textures and effects). A compelling narrative that cuts the line between survival horror and competitive FPS and brilliantly builds tension and dread as you progress. Addictive gameplay that I've personally played through more than a dozen times including the hardest difficulty. Come to think of it, I may be ready for another play-through soon. Cons - It's a little dated and there are a few jump scares. Bottom Line: This is a classic FPS that I wish would have set the tone for later games in the series. Maybe we can get an actual recreation along the lines of Dead Space remake one day, and better yet, a true sequel.

I remember when Doom 3 come out. I have the original game box. And, for how the graphics and environment where just no less than shocking (even by today standards), the overall gameplay was a huge letdown. Endless twisting corridors. Few enemies. Most of which just appear, litterally, out of nowhere. Behind you. Yes, it can be scary and thrilling, for the first few levels. True story that become a pure chore very fast. Weapons are a bit lacking in fire power, aside the shotgun, that is dramatically short range. Overall sound is very good. Possibly the weapons, again, could have been a bit more punchy. The story is "typical doom story" but is good enough. Especially how everything start. You are there from the beginning and so... I feel compelled to go trough the whole mess. The main problem I have with it is that you are always 30s behind the "good guys", but they keep eluding you. That is just so annoying. Anyway, why 4 stars? Because the package, as a whole, is a great piece of Doom history. While not perfect, I would have Doom evolving in this direction rather than the more modern, cartoonish, apporach. The environment are dark, heaving, and damn realistic. All those strange machinery. Enemies moves convincigly and feels demonic. The whole experience seems an evolution of the original Doom, rather than a parallel development. Should you play it? Definitely? Will you get bored of the constant spawning of enemies at your back? No question. Will you curse the dark environment? Just accept it. Will you have a blast experience? Yes.

Doom 3 was a great game when it first came out. Whether on the PC or the seemingly impossible port to the Xbox it was a showpiece of Graphics and Engine and really is quite unique in the FPS and Doom world. While Doom 1 & 2 and the new Doom 2016 share a lot in common I found Doom 3 is almost more like a Spin off than part of the main series. And that's not a bad thing at all. Doom 3 BFG is a nice remaster of sorts of the original while including its later released Expansion and as a Bonus the best ports of Doom 1 & 2 (Just ask Digital Foundry Retro) which are perfect for playing on todays modern PC's with updated controls to match. As for Doom 3 BFG its got lots of neat extra's and updates to make it an easy beast to deal with these days, certainly on the graphics front while the gameplay tweaks also make things a little easier to deal with. I would still recommend grabbing a copy of the original Doom 3 just to try it out for yourself and the subtle differences but with BFG you can enjoy it all in 4K or whatever Resolution you wish as opposed to the original's Max of 1600*1200 (Can be modded and fiddled with to get more Resolutions but that is what BFG does for you) or for most people with a 1080p monitor just 1280*1024! All in all its a great buy and the only reasons for not giving it 5 stars are as follows: One, no cloud support for saves which is a shame (the original ironically did on another Digital platform but BFG doesn't on any? Two, it doesn't feature the brilliant Co-Op mode for campaign that was added to the Xbox port? Why this couldn't of been included is a mystery and frankly a poor show as it would of made BFG the definitive version especially with the Doom 1 & 2 ports. Oh well you can't have it all I suppose....
