Distant Worlds, although at a glance looks like all the others out there with the research trees, fleets and stations etc... Has carved out something unique with what it does, incorperating a civialian industry operating within your territory and adding to your industry and fianaces. Add to this the option to take over and manage as much as you wish or as little, during your play session along with events occurring to prevent the game falling into the trap of just going through the motions except on a increasingly larger scale. You are left with in my opinion the only game that can stand toe to toe against Stellaris ( except it doesn't require an abundance of expensive DLCs to keep playing ). Where it couldn't match its rival was in having 3d models, if eye candy is important - and lets face it, in Space Games that's a yes. Still though I recommend this Epic Sim 100%. There is a Distant Worlds 2 now which does have 3d and numerous differences, but even now DW1 remains valid and offers infinate playability for a low price.
