A faithful port, for better and worse
For anyone considering buying this: on Windows 7 64-bit SP1, in order to run this game you will need to disable DEP in System Settings. There are guides on how to do this and it's simple and safe, but be aware. For the veterans who know Diablo 1 well: this is exactly as you remember it, with higher definition text, no stretching (the game runs in 4:3 ration with black bars to either side) and no crashing. For newbies to Diablo 1: If you're the patient type and want to see part of Blizzard's original stable that made it the juggernaut it is today, Diablo is awesome, but you must be willing to play D1 on its own terms. There are quality of life additions we take for granted in ARPGs/lootclickers nowadays that are not present in D1 (no item labels unless you're moused over an item on the ground, for example) and the game is difficult in some arbitrary ways that are a result of its age. With that said its atmosphere still can't be beat (tell me you don't get goosebumps listening to the original, best Tristram theme on that 12 string guitar) and it's a lot more open-ended than most games of its genre, meaning that you can turn your Wizard into an excellent Warrior, your Warrior into an excellent archer, etc. Great game and it's about time it got added to GoG.
