Not as good as 1 and 2, but...

It's still a good game. This one is vastly different from the previous two games though. While reactors are still in the game, there's a lot more variety in objectives here such as escorting and defending things. There's also 4 ships to choose from now, with some being faster or stronger than others. And finally, they've gotten rid of most of the popular weapons for some totally new ones like Napalm and the new countermeasures such as Proxy Mines or Betty. Weapons that many feel are unbalanced. But if you enjoyed the first 2 games then you should still find some fun here, because it's still an FPS afterall, and you still have to navigate your way through a level collecting keys and blowing up robots :)

With the recent source port it's decent

Poor controls (really), a lot of configuring required to get it even working on a modern system with Windows 10, I cannot recommend it at all. Without a special patch that's not included in the base download, the mouse is not working in the menus at all. Even with the patch the mouselook skips all over the place and renders the game basically unplayable. The 3D graphics part is solved through nGlide emulation which, albeit somehow working in the actual engine, screws up the menus for me. And the game constantly switches fullscreen modes for menus/videos and the ingame engine itself, which on itself takes a few seconds everytime, making it painful just to wait to get into the game. I'm really disappointed in this, it's almost no different than the 20 years old copy I have in my library and you're left to figure it out yourself. EDIT (2025): On it's own it's a mess in the modern OS's like Windows 11, but with the 2024's source port like Piccu Engine it's again playable. The game itself is decent, the levels are huge and it sort of reminds me of Lander (1999, Psygnosis) with it's overall vibe. It has been long surpassed by wonderful titles like Overload (2018) and Sublevel Zero (2015), but I still remember fondly how I was blown by the graphics back in 1999, so I still hold it dearly in my heart however the action has been dated for the last 20 years.

Good but not the same.

This was a step-up in graphics but the gameplay was sacrificed dramatically. The gameplay is slightly slower than D1 or D2 so this one wasn't that great but the story was developed a lil better. I'd prefer D2 or even D1 over this game out the trilogy.

Joystick issues

Before buying here, I acquired a demo (cough, cough) and it would not play nice with my MSoft Sidewinder 2 joystick...shame as it had potential. I have to check out these things before I buy, and buy I do before anybody says otherwise.

Making the most of every direction

Descent is an awesome 3 dimensional experience. It does take a little while to learn how to move in any and all directions but once you get it you are free to go where ever you want. The true Descent Master never cares which way is down as because it is whatever direction he wants it to be. CAUTION: You should never watch a Descent Master play as you are liable to loose your lunch as they twist and turn across and through many different worlds.
