Don't waste your money
I was excited to find a living dead turn based game, but the battles are clunky and not intuitive. Your team members get in the way all the time, and the zombies come out of the woodwork at the first gun shot. Beyond that I just didn't see the need to spend 10 minutes every "day" walking around the school to try to talk to people. One more thing, you ask the survivors what they want, and when you find the items, I couldn't figure out a way to give it to them. One other thing, the inventory is a drag, and you have to "drop" items if you want to give to another player. Overall very disappointing, should have saved the $30 for one of the other turn-based games on gog.com.

Sick of Zombie Games? Yeah me to, but...
Sick of Zombie Games? Yeah me too, but this one has you lead a team of survivors in a school, collecting resources and trying to build towards self sufficiency as much as possible, and fighting zombies and other humans in turn based isometric combat.

Finally the RPG for The Walking Dead
This game reminds me of The Walking Dead. Remember the time when Rick and his fellows captured a prison? In Dead State you own a school instead of a prison. There is a lot to do. As a leader you have to make all the important choices to survive. Is it neccessary to build a watchtower? Should the medic join me on my quest for loot or should she stay save at school? Do I use the fuel for a ride or for the generator? Texas is really huge and wants to be explored like back in the days when I played Fallout. It feels like leaving your vault and find out what happened in the world. Sooner or later rival gangs will find out where your base is and then there will be a big battle like the episode in TWD when the govenor claimed the prison for his community. This game still has some flaws and bugs but they didn´t bother me. It is the first RPG after a long long time which made me addictive. I am Rick Grimes. I am the leader of this small group. Join me or leave me alone but keep in mind that I will own Texas sooner or later!

Buggy but good
I'm not going to tell people that this game doesn't have bugs, because it does. However there have been some reviewers on here who have either overstated this, assumed bugs when they just didn't understand how things work, or got clearly into the bug/feature ground. There was a day-one patch problem that was impossible to ignore, but the devs got on that one almost as fast as that patch came out. They also show all sign that they're continuing to crank away at the ones that remain. The complaints about combat have some validity--people used to playing cover using games will find the lack of same a little annoying, and most guns do have pretty close ranges (though when it comes to things like handguns, people tend to overestimate the useful ranges in real life); however that doesn't mean combat lacks nuance, especially melee combat. And of course, a big part of the game isn't about combat; its about making hard decisions, and what you'll do to make sure that you and those you're leading will survive. While it isn't the only game that's gone there (there are shelter management elements to games from Fort Zombie, Zafehouse Diaries and State of Decay) Dead State is the first game that really commits to that and integrates it into the roleplaying game fully. I didn't give the game 5 stars currently because I don't want to suggest that the bugs don't matter, but even with those its an excellent game (caveat; Torque can apparently vary a bit at how it plays with different machines, and some people report a lot of crashing. This isn't universal, though, as I've had exactly one crash in many hours of play) and once a few of the more egregious once are dealt with it'll easily be the exemplar of the type of game its trying for.
