The map works on all internet devices with a modern browser.
This product is not a game or DLC content, but a standalone interactive map which, to access it, requires an online connection to a 3rd party provider.
Technically this is neither a game nor a DLC. It is access to an online service, hence IMHO DRM-free doesn't apply here: you cannot "install" a webpage, so there cannot be an offline installer for it. I agree that this is something I wouldn't have expected from GOG.com, but in their defense I have to say that this goes against all those "steam games have this and that – why doesn't GOG" comments out there: If GOG wouldn't supply this, the now very negative comments would be the other way around. That said, I confess that I wouldn't buy (or use) this map either, since it's unclear for how long such a webpage will (or can) remain... (4 stars for going new ways while staying true to the old ways.)
to counter all reviews claiming this product has DRM,.
You buy ACCES TO A WEBSITE, and to visit a website you need internet.
That is not the same as DRM.
DRM is a required internet connection for a app on your pc (a game is simple an app), which without DRM would not need that internet connection.
To reach a interactive map on a website - you need internet connection. Cause you want to visit a site on the internet.
Nothing to do with DRM. Its not even something from Cyberpunk nor CD Projekt.
Now, it is weird to add this as DLC, since its not DLC. Its something thats been used for ages already externalyy.
But its not DRM, educate yourself
Yup, as per the title, this is just a key to unlock the premium version of the map made by Piggyback, and it sells for a bit cheaper than on the Piggyback website.
Benefits over the free version include, most importantly, the ability track completed tasks or found items, although this doesn't included main or side quests. You also get access to a high-res version of the map. But most importantly, it unlocks the locations of "hidden gems", high-value items hidden in chests or on bodies, often with an accompanying log to tell a story of how that item or dead person came to be there.
While this is a great map, and I have no regrets about upgrading to the premium version, there are a few drawbacks:
- Firstly, you have to manually tick off everything. It would've been so much less hassle if there was an API to let the map access game data directly, like with a number if third-party tools for Destiny 2.
- Secondly, the map icons haven't been updated to the new style rolled out with patch 1.5.
- Thirdly, V's new apartments and associated fast travel stations are absent.
- Lastly, it would've been nice if there was a toggle to switch from the satellite view to the style present in the game, just to make it easier to correlate locations.
Those gripes aside, it's $5 well spent just for the hidden gem locations, which I haven't seen in any other free maps.
DISCLAIMER: I have the premium version of the map because I own the collector's edition game guide (which includes the code for what you're buying here), thus I'm lacking the "Verified Owner" badge.
As my review title says, do not be misled by the hate: this purchase isn't anywhere near as bad as many reviews here would lead you to believe. This is a paid upgrade for an otherwise free companion app-styled map that you can view through your browser. The basic version is free and offers enough functionality but this package is meant for people who don't have a copy of the guide.
This companion map is a nice feature to run alongside your sessions of Cyberpunk 2077 because of how it helps in your exploration of Night City. Just like the game guides, it's absolutely NOT a necessity, but it's still a fun add on to the game experience (somewhat similar to the digital art book that came with the game), just further helping to immerse you in an already remarkably immersive video game while encouraging deeper exploration.
I understand the complaint that there isn't any offline version; that is frustrating, but there's not really any way to make it offline without significantly stripping out a LOT of its features. It's not like GOG (or Piggyback for that matter) are misleading anyone, so why the complaints? Not only do the complaints use a VERY loose (and inaccurate) definition of DRM but people are literally only review bombing this because they don't like the fact that it's online, nevermind the fact that it's 100% optional. It's frustrating, because the map is remarkably well-made, having a Google Maps-style vibe to it, albeit set in Night City, of course, and it's a lot of fun to use.
Overall, if you like the game and love exploring, this is worth purchasing (though I recommend buying a physical game guide instead, if you can). Just ignore the complaining because it is 100% as-advertised and a nice enhancement to your adventures in the dark future.
