Description
Discover a large, living landscape - the surface a world called Albia. You exist in this world only as a virtual presence, a sort of remote-control existence, which the computer portrays as a hand-shaped mouse cursor. In this world are a range of locations and strange creatures, related loosely (and with considerable poetic license) to Northern myth. You begin near to the long-abandoned home of a family of Norns (small furry creatures), where a few eggs, languishing in a broken-down incubator, are almost all that remains of the Nornir race.
The first game in this twin pack introduces you to the world of artificial life technology and the Norns of Albia. Than you can discover the all-new Norns, Ettins and Grendels.
Explore the Shee Laboratories and discover the all-new Norns inhabiting a vibrant, living eco-system - find the Genetic Splicer and defend your Norns against the vicious and disease-ridden Grendels.
Creatures: The Albian Years is a compilation of Creatures 1 with both Life Kits, Creatures 2 with its Life Kit and 6 Official Object Packs
Unique gameplay centered around breeding and raising autonomous, computer-controlled Norns

Try as I might, I am unable to find the "Norn Converter" (or "Nornverter" as some websites call it), to allow me to bring my C1 Norns into a C2 world...
If I had known that was missing, I would still be using the disk of the original Creatures game that I have on my shelf! And I'd be a little richer for that foresight as well. >:(
I first played these games when I was merely a child, and of course I didn't understand it all too well, but I got the gist of it - care for the creatures and you'll enjoy it. Now I come back to the game after finding it here, and now understand the mechanics better, I can safely say if i'd never played this game as A child, i'd never have noticed it now. A true masterpiece, one of THE best titles of its time, and a crying shame that the original developers went bankrupt/stopped making games.
For those of us who were exposed to Creatures at a young age, it probably left an imprint of something peculiar, at least for me it did. Unfortunately I was never allowed to play this by my cousin[when I was but 6 and she was 9 respectively]. Despite this being pushed to the recesses of my mind, some 12 years later I stumbled across it again, at which point I said, "If I don't buy this I'll never have an experience of my own..and I also have no credit card whatsoever...". However, my grandfather was kind enough to buy it for my birthday and I just have to say this game is simply adventurous, the little norns always keep me on my toes. I have no idea what they'll do next!
This game certainly takes some getting used to, the initial creatures (norns) have no idea how to take care of themselves, and the world can be rather overwhelming at first, but once the third or fourth generation rolls around you can take your eyes off of them for a little bit longer! The world they live in, Albia, is amazing, the diversity of one area to another is captivating and beautiful. There are some areas where it's very dangerous for your norns to be, there are others where your norns can thrive for generations. I can play creatures for hours and not even realise the time has gone by! This game is so easy to change and alter to your hearts content with the amazing amount of user created content available on the net. Even though the game has been around for so many years, it's still an amazing game that can entertain for hours. Once you figure out how the various apps work the game is even easier to play! It definitely takes practise, but once you get the hang of it it's a lot of fun.
It's just not funny. It's like playing Sims. You can spend a good hours (or minutes) at the beginning while you see your own creatures growing and thinking. But then... what else? That's all. Your creatures will keep on growing and eating and learning words and ignoring your orders.
The interface is rudimentary enough to make it hard to play. You need a lot of opened windows (I mean Windows windows) if you want to see the evolution or changes affecting the creatures. You don't have a clear objective, you can't make them eat when they are hungry and you can't rise their low levels using the objects you have (unless they want to). There is a limited set of actions they can perform, and they will do them when they want.
Anyway, it's exciting to think about what is behind the scenes and it's a very good AI experiment. I understand they wanted to convert this in a game with a friendly interface in which agents become hairy cute creatures who react to environmental stimuli. But this only thing is not enough to be a game. You *are not* any of those creatures, you are just a hand giving orders. They should have used this AI to construct something bigger. Maybe a character commanded by you that should learn while other creatures learn by themselves around you. A spectacular Artificial Intelligence exercise surrounding a plot with real objectives, not just watching what happens.
It's nice to see one of those games by yourself, but not buying all of them, because there is no good reason to play them.
