Many myths and legends have been woven about the Arabian Peninsula. One of these legends tells of Iram, City of Pillars, and its exceptional destiny.
Being the heir to the throne you lived a life of splendor and never worked one day of physical labor – until one day, the winds of fate turned.
Days passed and the storm did not fade, if anything its strength and ferocity only grew. You would do anything to bring back only a spark of your mother's joy. And so, one night, when the kingdom sleeps and the moon smiles, you embark on a journey …
Caravan combines strategy with RPG elements resulting in a trading and exploration game packed with suspense and challenges. In a pre-medieval Oriental setting players will send their caravan from town to town. On their way, they will experience dangerous, mystical adventures, embark on rewarding quests in towns, and fight against dangerous bandits, beasts, ghoulish creatures and djinns.
Genre-Mix: diverse gaming experience through a mix of strategy, trade, and RPG elements
Players manage their own caravan
Setting based on history and geography of the Orient
Cultural authenticity through regional folklore and stories of the ‘Arabian Nights’
I have spend almost 10 hours with this game. I finished it and really enjoined it. It is very simple RPG game with funny story and some trading concepts in it. If you have an occasion to get it for 1$ or 2$ just buy it and you will not regret.
After 15 hours in the game I refused playing. It became too tedious. I didn't finish a quest to bargain with a dschinn. You have to run around endlessly to earn money to be able to level up, which costs too much. The music was nice, but it was absolutely nerving due to a permanent loop which works like torturing brainwash. Fortunately I didn't get diarrhoea playing it like in a real desert eating food which was sprayed by contaminated nile water.
The artwork of the game is beautiful, but it was cloned in all areas with minimal variation. The story is sparse with a small quest system. Travelling from city to city you will always get the same random little events.
The economy system is simplified. You will easy get into the game with it's good controls. The game runs stable with no crash. It is repetetive grinding to level up heroes. In the beginning the mini dice game for combat and bargaining was fun, but it became boring, too.
Caravan is a below average game with good ideas, but bad execution. It is only a concept of a game at all. The permanent awful grinding destroyed the whole gaming pleasure. I really can't recommend buying it.
First off I can understand, why so many people here call it monotonous. After you understood the mechanics and random encounters (which aren't many), you basically just grind to the end. Yet, the pace, the little side quests, the graphics and this happiness, when you can finally upgrade one of your heroes should keep you entertain at least for the 12 hours this game will give you.
It's something you can play, when you have some time to kill but don't want to put too much thought into your free time. For that, it's more than enough. The price might be too high for some players, but I would compare this game to your average 200-pages-book, which is roughly around the same price.
If you love fast-paced games, this is not for you. Desert is huge, crossing it is slow. And the game brings you that experience. Lead your camels from town to town, buy cheap, sell expensive. Uncover mysteries, fight ghouls and haggle the last coin from that trader. In all honesty, the game is a bit out of balance, casually simple and the stury is a bit primitive, but the whole feeling of a caravan in a desert worth it. The graphics and music complement the idea. Replayability is zero, but that one play worth it.
Crossing the desert to fulfill quests in ancient Arabia is quite well done. The visual mood and music is perfect. Game is calming and rewarding. Don't worry about replay value as you will enjoy the journey, and you just might want to see if you can do better a second or third replay with some of the quests or battles you will encounter. Helpful Notes on play [A] If you have a random encounter in the desert and are asked if you want to buy something or to help someone or investigate something or take something along with you, you only get one chance. You can't check prices and get back to them or check your inventory. Interaction starts a script once you begin it and if you back out, it is not possible to click on things again at that scene. No big deal with Traders since I find their prices too high. [B] Battles may be tough and only involve the ONE character you choose to enter the fight. It's not automatically you and your whole Caravan versus the enemy. This is why you may want to give a hired Fighter [or yourself] in your group a riding animal or weapon to add to their attack and an Assistant to absorb hit points [maybe to die] so you can fight on to a win. [C] Water is crucial. ALWAYS fill up at stops and carry EXTRA to be able to lose some in a random event so you can go onward. [D] You can only go FORWARD towards your destination. No reversing course in the middle of a trek between towns. It's an enjoyable game.
