Cannon Fodder

For those that played this on the Amiga originally, I would recommend skipping this and perhaps finding an alternative method of reliving one of the highlights of my early 90s gaming - this version is not a patch on the Amiga version that we knew and loved, the basic game mechanics are there, but it doesn't feel right at all. I suspect a great re-creation of the SEGA/PC version of the game, but not true to the original Sensible Software vision that I knew and loved previously. Jools, Jops and RJ - how I fought to keep them alive in the original, and how this version seems like such a pale imitation.

Cannon Fodder has appeared on almost every platform and been an amazing game that has aged superbly. The Cannon Fodder intro on Amiga was one of my earliest gaming experiences and the respectful depiction of war and the tributes given to those who served (such as poppies, look it up) while simultaneously being a satire is something no game before or since has managed to the degree that Cannon Fodder has. Stoo even sometimes survived.

It has been such a long time that I have seen or heard of this game. I remember playing the demo when it came out in 94. I played it over and over. At least I think it was the Demo. Anyways the fact is. Thank you GOG for bringing out this oldie that has been almost forgotten. I feel like I am a kid again. :D

Played the shareware demo for hours when I was a kid, so I thought the game was just tough. Turns out that it's just sloppy and hiding behind its humor. The UI is an unresponsive nightmare, even by the standards of the time (unable to load a saved game without a new game already being in progress, no quitting to DOS, I guess you just unplugged your PC?). Many levels of the game just turn into a luck-based quickdraw between your units and the rocket-launcher soldiers, since they're able to shoot at your range or longer (they can fire when under the UI bar). And even further levels add vehicles with ramp-jumping sections that make no sense for this control scheme. Not even my happy memories can save it.
