Cannon Fodder

I had this on a collection of PC games back in 1995 or so and I always enjoyed its fast and frantic play. The critics at the time loved it as well. But many heaped compliments on it like "nearly perfect" and "Game Of The Year". But there were quite a few good RTS games at the time, and before its time, that did a few things much better. So this game should be in line for a well deserved re-master. Movement is a bit of a pain because your soldiers tend to get hung up on scenery. Fixing their pathfinding would help, or at least make the scenery less troublesome. Shooting can be difficult because you must hold the right mouse button to shoot, but if you're trying to move and shoot quickly it's easy to toss a grenade or shoot a rocket and wipe out your own team. Just assign hotkeys to grenades and rockets so we don't have to select them from the edge of the map. Finally, movement is frustrating because your pointer moves while your team moes, always trying to bring the two together. RTS games at the time were allowing your pointer to stay in the same relative position so directing units was easier. Cannon Fodder is a great game and it's definitely worth picking up, but be ready to die a lot of deaths that seemingly come from nowhere. I guess that's the appeal of this game and its message?

Loved this game on the SNES and on the pc it isn't as good, to me graphics appeared worse especially in jungle areas than the SNES version I remember, it is a lot harder on pc due to speed of movement and AI has much more awareness of your location with their rockets so expect to loose nearly all your squad and recruits at stages 5 onwards but stage 8 I gave up on, for me I felt like I was being punished for playing the game and felt the AI was close to cheating against me the player. Overall with saying the above there is a fun game to be had here that no doubt other people will be able to handle the difficulty better than I have and if so I salute you ;)

THE BEST GAME EVER in the history of games, all past, present and future! And now I can play it again :D. Buying as soon as I get home and not going to sleep all weekend! Now there's one more game to cross out from my list of my childhood gems :).

I have a lot of fond memories of this game, playing it on an Amiga 500 (although upgraded to 1000 mind you). I saw that this was available here and immediately thought "why not, why shouldn't I play this awesome Amiga shooter again". And I played. And then my computer died, so that is why I'm only now writing this review, after years of renowned neglect. And by GOD was I disappointed. This isn't the "original" Amiga version that I had played, all those years ago. This is some shoddy crappy PC port, without the original sounds (and probably also explains the shoddy controls too..). And I also confirmed this from my brother, who was a huge fan of the "original" Amiga version, and didn't really even recognize this one. So yeah, GOG, if you actually want to be preserving games, I hope you would pay more attention to the different kinds of versions out there. 2/5, not nearly as good as the Amiga version, not by far (the sounds and music are the biggest issue for me) the best version, but since I was once fooled by memory to play this version, I'd say it's decent.

This game are great, it has all the eliments to be a great game. Comedy, Strategy, and turnbased action... what more could one want ?
