JSR successor that gets in its own way
As is obvious to most, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a spiritual successor of sorts to the Jet Set Radio series from Sega and Smilebit. I love that the art style was able to be so flawlessly re-appropriated for the game and that the music follows along similar lines that the Jet Set Radio games provided — though, some songs will be hit-or-miss for some. My only real issue with the game is that the story often gets in the way of just cruising and spraying graffiti. It's not a terribly interesting story, and if feels like it takes a couple of hours to let you off the leash and take a break from its cutscenes, only to reel it back in toward the final act of the game with more cutscenes. The graffiti mechanic is also a bit less interesting than the games it pays homage to, being more about memorizing a list of connect-the-dots patterns, similar to a phone lockscreen. It allows for the use of ALL graffiti collectibles, but it does make it feel less special. The boss battles are also a bit groan-inducing, just being a bit tedious. Overall, pretty good. Relatively short, with some hidden collectibles to chase and some unlockables that add replayability.
