I ended up playing this game via a physical copy on PS5, because unfortunately the devs aren't interested in the GOG version of their game. As far as they're concerned, only the Steam version exists on PC.
I really wanted to buy this game. But the way this game is treated here gives me no other choice than to skip it on PC, as I'm not interested in renting a license on Steam.
-This game has never been on discount here;
-Mod support, which is a big part of this game, is inferior;
-No achievements;
-No Official Soundtrack available to purchase here, which honestly is the biggest offense, because it is an absolutely magical soundtrack.
If a Team Reptile dev is reading this, you don't need to maintain 2 separate game builds for Steam and GOG. You can make a Steam build, and just apply the GOG Galaxy dll's from the SDK Wrapper, which will translate all the Steam dll's present in the game files into something GOG Galaxy understands. This way, you'll have less on your plate, mod support should be equal to Steam, and achievements on GOG should work too.
Also, a discount once in a while would be nice :)
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is really in the top five of my favorite games from 2023 along with Pizza Tower, Hi-Fi Rush, and Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2. It's not perfect as I would later detail in this review, but if you enjoy Jet Set Radio/Future or any cult classic games in that style from the early 2000s, this one is for you.
Pros:
-Great gameplay
-Excellent presentation
-Charming art-style reminiscent of games from the early 2000s
-Really good soundtrack
-Decent story
-Good controls
-Plays and runs really well
-Interesting characters
-Fun mechanics
-Cool maps
Cons:
-$40 is a bit much for this game, $25-$30 max would have been better, but thank goodness it was a good game
-Some challenges can a bit annoying, but it's not a deal-breaker or anything
-As mentioned in another review, the keybind is a bit messed up (however I didn't deal with this issue much since I used a controller to play this game, but still)
-Day 1 DLC, even though it's not here along with the soundtrack. Seriously, why put content that could easily be an unlockable behind a paywall; I thought indie games are supposed to deviate from the greedy, anti-consumer practices of modern AA/AAA companies
-Some of the songs were meh to me
-Story was a bit generic/boring for me at times
Although there were some flaws with the game, like some of the blatant anti-consumerism, it is quite impressive that an indie studio is able to make a surprisingly great game inspired by Jet Set Radio. It's even almost identical to Jet Radio Future if you take a quick glance at it. I would suggest buying this game to support the devs, but I honestly recommend buying the game on sale. Despite all of that, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is definitely one of my favorite games of 2023, and I'm glad I bought and played this game.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a 3rd person platformer crossed with light Tony Hawk-style trick combo mechanics in a stylized cel-shaded future with a killer hip-hop soundtrack HEAVILY influenced by Sega's classic Jet Set Radio series.
The premise is you're a robotic head attached to the decapitated body of one of New Amsterdam's top graffiti artists, and you're trying to track down your lost head by helping your adoptive gang, the Bomb Rushers, tag landmarks all over the city and force rival gangs to admit their dominance. No, I will not explain further, just go with it.
You explore the wacky city of New Amsterdam for ideal graffiti spots and collectibles to the sounds of the funky soundtrack. The ideal way to travel is grinding the city's many, many rails, doing tricks along the way to charge up your jetpack for super speed and air-control.
Tagging graffiti points involves a gesture-click QTE where you connect dots on a star shape, and the order in which you connect the dots determines what specific art you leave there (and you have the option to change it later).
One change from JSR is you now have the option to step off your wheels when you need to navigate tight corners or engage in breakdancing-esque combat. Not all characters use inline skates, some use skateboards or bikes.
The graphics are as good or better than the JSR originals, and the music is full of bangers. My main complaint is the lack of a DJ Professor K-style narrator makes the cutscenes way drier than they need to be, just consisting of generic voice grunts over text.
I've been waiting for a Jet Set Radio 3 for years, and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is as close as we're likely ever going to get. Two thumbs up!
Folks, it's 2023. There is absolutely no reason I should be forced to use a redundant key layout (or worse, a controller) when I don't want to. They did less than the bare minimum here, where effort was actually put into being able to rebind ONLY the action keys they wanted to let you rebind (movement is forced as WASD, and there's no way to change this at time of this review).
My other complaint is that the Steam version of this game includes Day 1 DLC (two characters) and the soundtrack, which is entirely absent here. I'm tired of giving developers leeway for the trending anti-consumerism culture the industry has been adopting as mainstream, now infecting the indie scene as smaller studios attempt to emulate the bad practices of modern AA/AAA companies.
