Good at first, then a difficult grind
Bloodstained starts out pretty well - clearly a love letter to Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and one that hits most of the right notes. It starts out well, but then falls apart in the second half as difficulty increases exponentially and it turns into a tedious, grueling grind. The metroidvania gameplay is mostly good. Combat is fun, exploration is interesting and slowly expands with your abilities, and the game looks lovely. The story and writing, unfortunately, is pretty lackluster and seems to get worst towards the middle. The level design is mostly good, though I found the 3D sections a real pain to navigate. This game definitely has difficulty spikes - most of the bosses are hard, some of the bosses are really hard, and one blood-soaked boss took me dozens and dozens of attempts. But I had fun with it for the first half, and then the game changed. The second half features an exponential jump in difficulty - like someone flipped the switch from Normal to Hard. Regular enemy damage suddenly jumps to deadly. Each room becomes a trial to get through. I found myself having to grind souls to boost my elemental resistances just to try to survive. The game that I was really enjoying suddenly turned into a miserably experience. I'm okay with difficulty spikes, but this was like hitting a brick wall. I love Castlevania Symphony of the Night and its sequels - Aria of Sorrow, etc. I wanted to love Bloodstained, but in the second half it became so hard that it leeched all the fun out of the game and I eventually gave up.

Castlevania in everything but name.
I didn't really wait for this game to come out. I was afraid - Mighty No.9 left such bad taste for me that I expected this game to fail. Gladly I was wrong. When trailer with release date came out, I gave myself to the urge and preordered it. After ~5 days, 3 of which weren't longer than 3-4 hours (I mean, I worked entire week) I finished the game. Or at least finished it to 99.6%. I'm not a completionist, but at least I did all quests and did everything that mattered. So in general, how good is this game? It's pretty much excellent... As long as you don't go for that 100% completion. Thing is - that normally gameplay is smooth and nice and reminds of oldschool Castlevania games such as Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow and Down of Sorrow. My biggest complaint is the quest grind. In some quests you are required to get special ingridient for crafting. That's ok. That ingridient drops only from specific monsters in specific areas. That's also OK. What is NOT ok is the drop-rate. Some items drop with the chance of 1% or even lower. This means, that when you want to get the item, you have to go to room, kill the monster, check for drop. If it's not there, go away from the room and then back. Rince. Repeat. Until you get what you want. I swear that getting that piece of Flying Beef took me almost an hour of this samey procedure! And I topped my Luck stat with best Luck raising equipment I could find. And that's only one item for crafting. There's a ton of them. AND... Well, that's almost all negativity I have against the game. There's also questionable performance - sometimes it feels that framerate of the game drops while my PC's monitor doesn't show high load on either CPU, RAM, Videocard and disk. Also, there's a small bug with enemies sometimes not dropping items properly. And, that's it. Everything else in this game is nothing short of amazing, high quality Metroidvania game. If not for grind, I'd say, it's the best game in this genre... Probably.

Incredibly addicting gameplay loop
What a game. Very addicting. A great homage to the original. Don't miss it.

Fantastic Game: Deeper Then You Think
The game is deeper than it first lets on. The crafting is one thing, the cooking another. It give you incentives to seek out all the recipes by giving you a permanent stat increase the first time you consume a food. This makes you really want to track down all the recipes and create them at least once. Some of them are some of the best healing items in the game as well. When everything was said and done, it gave massive bonuses. I think when I completed the game I had 10% increased XP as well 8 MP regenerated per second. It was nuts. There is also the fact that there are hidden abilities with a lot of the items. For example there is a grinder blade that has spinning spikes on it. You think it's just a cool looking weapon but it actually hits multiple times with every swing. There is an armor you can collect from a certain enemy which actually turns you into that enemy while you wear it, and it's based off another games character as well as an homage to that game. The shards are crazy. There are so many, almost one per enemy in the game and many are quite different form each other. You can increase the grade of these by collecting duplicates of them. The you can use ingredients found around the world (found in chests and reaped from dead enemies) that update the rank. Having a full stock of 9 increases the effect (damage, for example) while leveling the grade will do things like make more of the summons appear or increase the radius of an effect. It's quite awesome because it's levels of stuff you can do that are optionally there to experiment and play with. I have seen some coverage of people complaining about the games price, but at $40 it's an incredibly good deal in my opinion. I beat the game, with all the optional bosses and side quests with a 100% map in about 31 hours. They have committed to releasing further content for free and I can't wait to see it. And if they released a paid expansion I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it.
