Description

Finally the Batmobile ...

... wait ... what? A tank? Yep, it's a tank. What so many people waited for in Arkham City became a twisted reality. We wanted a living city to drive through and got a city full of bad guys (good guys were hiding) in which we had to use a tank to solve some gameplay riddles and fight drones. When released, the PC verion had some serious problems, but those were not solely Rocksteady's fault. This game would fill most of the memory of the common graphics card back then, the most common Nvidia card at that time however would not adress all of it's memory at full speed, so we had some very severe frame rate drops from time to time. But there were also some opportunities for random crashes which had nothing to do with the hardware. But after a few months and quite a few patches later, the game was running just fine. The public reception was ruined however. It was also recommended to use a dedicated graphics or Ageia PhysX card to run hardware accelerated PhysX. Is Arkham Knight a bad game? No, not at all. It still has most of it's predecessor's strengths, there are not too many skills (yes, at some point you are actually done and don't worry about XP anymore). The story is still guite good, the gameplay is just the same as before. There are more annoying enemy types which were really frustrating when I played this game the first time. Some of the battles I had to play multiple times. But at some point you figure out how to beat them and then you are glad not to see these buildings ever again. As long as you don't need the tank for riddles, try to use another Batmobile skin from the DLCs. You can use the 1989 version and als wear a skin that resembles Keaton's suite. I liked playing the game, but in the end I must say that Arkham Origins felt more fitting to the Batman francise.

Bad design ruins a fun game.

The other Batman: Arkham games are fantastic and this game has more of that same formula. So why am I not giving this game 5 stars? -It's horribly optimized. It wouldn't even launch until I downloaded a specific .dll from Microsoft that the developers decided not to include in the installer for the game, or even mention was needed. And after I got it to run, it repeatedly crashed in the same cut-scene until I disabled fog-physics in the options menu. I should mention that my computer specs are way above the recommended specs for this game, so there's no reason why it shouldn't run fine. The developers were just lazy on the PC port. -Speaking of cut-scenes, there's a lot of them. For an action game, it certainly loves to stop all of the action and take away your control for a few minutes in order for something to play out. Seriously, I half expected to see Hideo Kojima's name somewhere in the credits. -It's full of busy work. Spoiler alert: You know all of those "optional" side-objectives? They're not optional. If you want to see the full ending, you're going to do all of them. Disarm every bomb. Solve every riddle. Shut down every checkpoint. There are literally hundreds of them. -The end boss is a cut-scene. Yes, seriously. Not even a cut-scene with QTE's. You just sit there and watch. -Hey, did you know that this game has the batmobile? It has the batmobile. Wouldn't you like to drive the batmobile? Hey, it's been five minutes since you drove the batmobile. Here's a puzzle that can't be solved without the batmobile. Here's a boss that can't be beat without the batmobile. Here's a building that can't be entered without the batmobile. Batmobile. Batmobile. Batmobile. -It gives you a bunch of gadgets then defeats their purpose by making enemies that can only be taken out in one very specific way. There's no player agency or creative problem solving. Just mash these particular buttons in this particular order and win.

Good game, bad version

Frankly, I love this game. I love the combat, I love the new gadgets, I love Batman's mobility. Gliding around Gotham is an absolute joy, and it almost makes it difficult to go back to City, just because I'm always left missing Knight's gliding. Along with everyone else, I don't like the batmobile all that much (the Ace Chemicals section used it well enough, but it's downhill from there), and the fear takedowns just feel like a replacement for more interesting stealth gameplay and you'll have a better time if you just ignore it entirely. Story wise, it has some incredible moments, but this version of the Scarecrow just isn't as fun as Asylum's version, and there's a very obvious character/player disconnect when the world's greatest detective is the last person to figure out who the Arkham Knight is. I wish I could give the game 5 stars, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are easily 5 star games, and I would give the Steam version of Knight 5 stars too despite its faults. But I have to knock off a star for 3 major reasons specific to the GOG version. 1) no achievements. Speaks for itself really, Steam version of the game has achievements, GOG version does not. 2) Freeflow focus 2.0 does not work. There's a combat upgrade called freeflow focus 2.0. When you reach a certain combo level, time slows down and your attacks are stronger. For some reason, this does not work in the GOG version. I've tried multiple installs on multiple machines, doesn't work on any of them. 3) There appears to be a glitch with the riddler informants. On the steam version I had no issues completing all of the riddler's challenges. However, on the GOG version, riddler informants have stopped spawning, yet there are still riddler challenges that have not been completed but are not marked on the map. It is possible that maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but due to the freeflow focus issue, I know there are glitches in this version of the game that are not present in the Steam version.

One of my favorite games.

The last game in the Arkham trilogy. This game is (along with Arkham City) one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know how many times I replayed this series, across multiple platforms. Pros - You really feel like you're Batman in the game. RS did an amazing job. - An enhanced version of Arkham City in almost every way with better graphics, bigger world, and more upgrades. - Grapple boosting through the city is so much fun. It's one of the most fun ways to travel in any game. Sometimes, I'll just boost around the city just for fun. - Simple, but fun combat with lots of different moves and gadgets. - Very fun stealth sections. The stealth challenges, in particular, are so fun. - The Batmobile is a nice addition that adds more to the game and the Batman fantasy. - Excellent open world with a lot to do. - Awesome challenge missions with lots of playable characters add a lot to the game. - Great story. - Perfect atmosphere. - Excellent voice acting. - Graphics are amazing. Cons - The Batmobile is overused and gets repetitive. The Batmobile battles, in particular, replace all major fights, but they're too simple and shallow to be used so much. - Batmobile controls terribly and skids all over the place. This makes the race challenges and a couple of boss encounters very annoying. - No option to turn on counter icons in NG+. - Environment takedown and vehicle takedown cameras are very disruptive. - With so many different enemy types crammed together, it can be a bit annoying trying to use a specific move on a specific enemy. This can be a bit annoying for combat challenges. - Inaccurate controls and medals sometimes not registering can make for frustrating experiences during hard predator challenges. - Some of the predator challenge objectives are extremely frustrating. - Poor optimization. - A little buggy. - Issues recognizing DS4 controller.

Batman Arkham Knight

This is hands down the finest Batman Arkham game ever made. Everything is top notch. It's an open world game, paced like a linear action game. The story telling is near impossible to take your attention away from. It keeps you hooked until the end. The graphics hold up even today and are some of the best I have ever seen with extreme attention to detail. The combat is at it's fastest and most fluid yet. The predator sections are overflowing with choices and gadgets to play with. There are a few negatives though that I want to address. -First is the riddler. His story stuff is good but tying his trophies to the character's ending and the game's true ending was a mistake. You might not mind finding them the first time but upon repeat playthroughs, it sucks. It's a problem in Arkham City as well. I really don't get it. Rocksteady have shown they can do excellent escape rooms that fit riddler perfectly, so it really stings that they are locked behind tedius collectables. -Second and final complaint is the story. The original writers left and it feels like it. This game feels a bit detached from it's predecessors and that's a shame. While I can forgive some of the more comic booky elements here. The "build up", twists and Arkham Knight himself leave a lot to be desired and would have worked much better if he was actually built up over the last two games. You might be expecting me to complain about the Batmobile now, but the truth is, it's a controversy severly overblown. The Batmobile is fun and the tank sections are enjoyable. Ignoring the side content, it is not an overused mechanic and most of the time it just feels like any other gadget Batman has, albeit, a giant tank. Contrary to popular belief there is a story reason for Batman having a tank and it's rather clever but something you have to discover yourself. I can't recommend this game enough. It's not perfect, but it's damn close and it deserves far more praise than it gets.
