I'd recommend playing through the Baldur's Gate 1: EE first, before playing this.
The game can be challenging at times, but the biggest allure of the game comes from its story rich RPG content. There is a lot to do, a lot to explore, and it has great atmosphere.
It is however prone to breaking at times, more so when the EE content is involved so keep several save files at all times.
I'd also recommend something like the Gibberlings 3 - Tweaks Anthology pack, that is an installer for a slew of mods of which you can choose and pick what to install:

For anybody who hasn't played Baldur's Gate II, I would suggest this edition. It truly is the great RPG that people say it is. If you have played it, I would still suggest getting it on sale.
Pros:
1. New Characters are Great: BG II really shines because of the interactions with the NPCs. The addition of new companions that have unique abilities and interesting side quests will really enhance your playthrough and give you lots of options on who to bring. I especially liked Neera and Dorn.
2. Compatible with the Old Mods: There are some really great mods that add more dialogue and items and they all work with the new edition.
3. No Need for Graphical Mods: As someone who has had to fiddle with the widescreen mod for Planescape and KOTOR, it really is nice to be able to just get into the game and not worry about if everything is scaled correctly.
4.: The Black Pits?: This will only be a pro if you really enjoy the combat of Baldur's Gate, as it's just a dungeon crawl.
Cons:
1. If you already have BG II, the only Pro that matters is the new characters. However, if you get it on sale I think it is worth the price. The characters really are filled out nicely. They aren't just tacked on.
Notes:
-I bought this game right after it came out and didn't encounter any bugs. They've also done a lot of patches, so you should take the reviews discussing the plethora of bugs with a grain of salt as you will most likely not encounter such problems.
ass someone who played both orignal and enhanced editions the community as a whole was fine with bgee 1.3 bg2ee1.3 and iwd1.4. this was before siege of dragonspear and planescape torment and neverwinter nights enhanced editions and used a different u.i and sprite filter basically making it a different game experience entirely. i had to make hard copies of my old dgog versions and the galaxy version of 1,3 doesnt play right and glitches out. if you could add in the goodies section a copy of version 1.3 for bgee 1 and 2 and 1.4 for icewind dale it would make alot of us fans very happy
I despise bad progressivism, if they didn't change anything in the story or with the characters I would buy it in the blink of an eye, weather on discount or not.
Buy the game if you don't care about the above, because other than that the game is fantastic.
