Mais ses atouts techniques ne sont pas l'unique raison de son immense succès ; son scénario est tout aussi excellent.
Même si techniquement, vous incarnez Desmond Miles dans le présent, la majeure partie du jeu se déroule à Jérusalem en 1191, à l'époque de la troisième croisade. Vous faites partie d'un ordre d'assassins mystérieux, entraîné dans le seul et unique but de tuer. Mais l'influence grandissante de l'ordre des templiers perturbe l'équilibre des pouvoirs et menace directement la Confrérie. Le choc entre deux des plus puissantes organisations de Jérusalem a des conséquences inattendues et déclenche une série d'évènements menaçant l'avenir du monde tout entier. Et vous, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, vous trouvez dans l'œil du cyclone.
Un scénario bien construit qui vous réserve de nombreuses surprises.

It really pains me to leave a negative review of this game, especially on GOG, but this version of the game suffers from terrible controller support, a myriad of bugs that heavily affect play including being essentially unable to run above 60fps without breaking physics, and very frequent freezing caused by the game trying to contact a long dead Ubisoft server that should have been patched out when it first became available on this storefront.
GOG desperately needs to make some form of patch to this title to at least remedy the server issue as it is the most egregious of the performance issues, and no game that we purchase on GOG should even be TRYING to contact servers while we're playing unless we consent to it doing so. This issue should not exist as a bare minimum for this storefront and what they stand for.
Let me start by saying that Assassin's Creed II is one of the best games I have ever played. It has absolutely amazing graphics, a beautiful world, lots to do, a FANTASTIC story, wonderful and deep characters, and the game was entertaining from start to finish.
Now, how I feel about the original Assassin's Creed...
This game has a fantastic engine, and the gameplay is extremely fun. Running around from rooftop to rooftop, assassinating random guards is fantastically fun.
Unfortunately, when it comes down to doing missions, the game becomes extremely repetitive and boring.
You might spend 30 minutes running around the city, performing different tasks to gain information on your target. You get everything set up, and all you need to do is sneak into the crowd, blend in, and make the kill.
But then, a crazy old old beggar man in the crowd gets angry, and pushes you for no reason at all. No big deal, right? Only now, all the guards have drawn their weapons and are coming towards you. So what do you do? You kill them all, one by one, and then assassinate the target.
And it wasn't even hard. This is how every single assassination goes. It becomes so impossible to stealth kill that it ends up being a massive battle against tons of guards, and you kill them all one by one with a few well timed strikes.
There is a problem with a game when it is more fun to make up your own story line and run around and kill people than it is to do the assassinations you're supposed to.
On top of that, it takes forever to quit, as you have to quit from the Middle Ages into modern times, then walk around and quit modern times, then quit the game file, and menu, and other menu... something like that.
All in all, its a wonderful world to explore, but it seems like they put all the time into the engine and the mechanics. Considering they really hit the nail on the head with Assassin's Creed II, there really is no point playing this one.
I am going to be blunt some people hate everything have a very narrow point of view they think they are superstars and every game is TOO easy for them. 90 plus percent don't fit in that categlory I enjoy a game for the play and feel it needs to have a good story although not perfect "IT IS" a very enjoyable game in my honest opinion. I have almost all the Assassian's Creed games and I really like all of them. Listen to the ones who have a good review and HEAR what they like about it that will tell you more about if you might like the game than a a dozen negative reviews will. That applies to any game not just this one. Some people will hate the best of games because they just don't get it the story and or play. That does not make the game bad just not their cup of tea.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, but I do not think it is for everyone. I love it because it is immersive. The mechanics force players to observe the world and not to rush through it, as a result, mission mechanics repeat themselves, but this clears away any learning curve that might take you out of the experience. Also, this is why many feel the the gameplay is slow or even boring. If you like fast and relflex intensive games, I do not think you will like this one. If you like getting lost in an immersive an highly detailed world (LA Noire fan?), you will have a wonderful time.
I'm not gonna pretend this is perfect, but it's the beginning of a great franchise. There are plenty of things to dislike about AC1, but when it comes down to it, this is Assassin's Creed in its purest form. The origin of the Creed, the the series' roots as historical sci-fi, not as a Witcher knock-off.
This is, as far as I'm concerned, the only correct way to begin the series.
