I think this mod came out in 2019 and still as of 2025 as I'm typing this in the reviews , this is still by far one of the best Doom 2 GZDoom mods/wads I have ever played. It feels like it is its own game and doesn't feel like Doom 2 even like I just said its a GZDoom wad/wads. The sythwave futuristic apocolyptics 80s feels obviously taking inspiration from movies like Mad Max .
Takes DOOM to entirely new world with a mix of Fallout and STALKER. I thought the whole thing was fun and it was cool that there were hubs where you could get sidequests/buy items. Fresh for a doom mod.

I remember hearing about ASHES years ago and really wanted to play it but, out of all the DOOM mods I could play, this one just wouldn't work. Then they announced an expansion for it so I decided to just wait even longer.
Now that it actually wants to work, this is great. Tbh, I didn't really pay attention to the story but the enemy & gun variety is intense and fun as hell. I would actually buy a full game set in this world. The sprites are so well designed that even the slightly different raider enemies are easy to read from a distance. There were a few times where I got lost as some of the routes to progress are hidden but otherwise pretty solid experience. There's some sound effects that (I swear) are ripped straight outta "Fallout", which just adds to the nostalgia factor. The music also rocks and really immerses you when necessary. Highly recommend.
Downloaded this for free and to be honest, it's better than a lot of games I've paid for. Sure the graphics are simple, but that has it's own charm these days. For what they're working with, Doom II basically, they did a really good job. Playing it on Survivor mode which makes it more intense. I have to be careful with ammo and supplies and be careful how I approach fights. Easily spent 2 hours and lost track of time.
It's free and fun so why not get it?
One of the best post apocalyptic fps experiences I've had in some time. I quickly grew addicted to this game. The amount of content and detail in what's ultimately a doom 2 mod is insane. I highly recommend this fans of the fallout (FPS) and stalker games, who appreciate retro FPS experiences.
