Description
The world of Arx is wrought with turmoil, brought to the brink of destruction by a violent war. Arx Libertatis (for Linux)

I always wanted to play Arx Fatalis when it was released years ago but eventually forgot about it after a few weeks. I purchased a copy yesterday here on GOG after confirming it would play well on a Linux machine. It kinda does but instead of using WINE for it in a Linux environment I strongly advise you to install the ARX LIBERTATIS port. (Google it) So far it has been a great game. Just leaving this review for those who don't use Windows but Linux instead :-)

Old School Appeal Only

I've played and finished Arx Fatalis and I have to say that it is only an average game. Unlike sprawling environments of RPGs like Oblivion the level design is very tight and there's always something interesting. The environments are also fairly different. Sound is also well done and feels very appropriate. Unfortunately, many aspects of the game that try and make it immersive such as combining raw ingredients to make food come off as unnecessary or repetitive after a while. For example, there is no short cut to making food even after discovering the ingredients. So to make more apple pies, you have to manually mix dough and water over and over again. There is also no place to store items so I ended chucking everything in an empty room and making a huge mess. The same problems go with spell casting, you have to manually draw runes in the air to cast spells. Again, this is suppose to be immersive but just ends up annoying when you do it for the 50th time. Sword fighting is extremely simplistic but normal attacks are pointless and you have to always charge your attacks to deal any real damage. And most goblins and humans take at least 3 or 4 fully charged attacks before dying. It came to the point where I wondered why the developers even bothered letting you attack without charging up. I am perhaps judging it harshly and overall the gameplay and atmosphere is fairly well done considering the limited resources of the studio. If you play the second game by the studio "Dark Messiah - Might and Magic" you'll notice some of these criticisms have been addressed. For example, learnt spells can simply equipped and can be cast with a single click and you no longer need to cook food so Arkane have obviously taken on board the criticism.

Atmospheric, immersive and very buggy!

"Arx Fatalis" has so many qualities - everything from the atmosphere, storyline, gameplay and overall design is top-notch. Unfortunately, it suffers from a lot of bugs and it's more or less impossible to get it to run well on a modern computer. You will either get a really low frame rate or the game will keep crashing on you (most likely you'll experience both!). I thought I got it working well this last time I played it, but eventually I started getting the "fatal memory error" bug and various other, smaller issues. It is somewhat playable if you have A LOT of patience, though. This game truly deserves 5 stars, but as it is, I can only give it 3. :(

Interesting and fresh

Compared to recent RPGs, this game is very different and feels very fresh. This game does not try to simulate an open world as Fallout and Oblivion tried, yet it feels much more open than the worlds in the said games. Where in an open world invisible walls seems wrong, in dungeons the real walls are ok. And you move through dungeons starting with escape from a prison all the time. The dungeons feel as natural and well designed as the offices in Half-Life 1 do. And the story develops very well. If I should compare it to other games, it would be a combination of Die by the Sword and Might and Magic VI-VIII. The realtime combat with some degree of strategy (just move closer, strike, pull out, etc.), mostly linear way forward and RPG style like Might and Magic VI-VIII. The only thing that I would like to change is the controls. I would be much happier if I were able to collect items by pressing spacebar and having the inventory over the whole screen with the game paused. But yeah, just a minor flaw.

Unique but frustrating.

This game made a very clean escape from being one huge medieval sewer level. The setting of the game is a world whose sun died long ago. The races of the world worked together and managed to move civilization underground before the inevitable apocalyptic freeze. Now, the peace and cooperation is wearing thin. You start in a dank dungeon with nothing but vague promises from a fellow prisoner who offers to help. Progressing from literally a bone-swinging savage in tattered leather thongs, you can become any sort of warrior, launching massive fireballs or cleaving foes with swords. However, the game becoming increasingly unforgiving, so the player learns to be consistent in skill development. The amount of environmental interaction rivals the best of modern RPGs. You can mine gems and metals, cook, manufacture weapons, and use the environment to kill more difficult foes. The story gets darker and creepier the further you go, but the developers accomplished a great in adding vast detail to what is supposed to be a limited environment.
