For years, you have trained to become an Imperial Battlemage, learning the ways of magic and combat to serve and defend the Emperor. Now, as your final test, you must complete the dreaded Battlespire, facing the challenges that lie within. As you enter the proving ground, however, something doesn’t feel right. You soon discover that Mehrunes Dagon, a Daedra Lord, has invaded and ravaged the Battlespire, killing all in his wake. You are the last hope and although ill-equipped and unprepared, it's up to you to stop Dagon’s plan and restore the Battlespire to Imperial control.
Originally envisioned as an expansion for The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, this installment was instead released by Bethesda as a stand-alone title. Although still within the Elder Scrolls world and brimming with many loved elements, Battlespire is unique in several aspects; rather than open-world exploration, the game emphasises survival, taking players through 7 levels, including various realms of Oblivion. There are also no shops or merchants, leaving players to salvage whatever they can from their fallen foes. Full character and stat customisation are still a key component of gameplay, as is the ability to craft spells on the fly and the game is full of the lore and characterisation for which the series’ is renowned. Can you defeat Dagon and prove you are worthy of serving the Emperor?
Battlespire is Bethesda's foray into pure action, based on the Daggerfall engine, this one removes most of the things that made Daggerfall great, and sticks you in a tower in which you have to fight your way out of. pure action, no Role Playing.
if the latest and greatest looking is your thing, you wont like this, but for Elder Scrolls fans, it is a must have, even if only to experience it once.
If you're planning to buy this game, consider the following:
- You will experience a ridiculous amount of crashes to your desktop.
- You will experience a LOT of occasions where your character gets stuck.
- The game will sometimes crash if you drop an item.
- The game will sometimes crash if you equip an item.
- etc.
About the game:
Most of the levels are small and incredibly boring. Long, tiny corridors, large empty rooms. Poor texturing, like doors that have different textures on each side. Textures that don't seam together.
Really poorly designed and just sloppy, so sloppy. Like they didn't even try.
Weapons all look the same. A daedric longsword looks exactly like an iron/elven/dwarven or any other longsword.
They didn't bother to create different icons for sigils and sigils of entry. Regular sigils are useless and drop all over the place. Sigils of entry are required to get through a level. What the problem with this is? If you happen to miss a sigil of entry somewhere you'll spend an hour checking inventories from dead enemies in order to find that sigil of entry you missed.
When you die (and you will) the game restarts. No drop to the main menu, no, it restarts itself.
The inventory screen looks horrible. Many items look off when you wear them and there's a lot of clipping.
Jumping is terribly implemented and you will often miss your target or get stuck.
Damaging spells don't seem to do anything at all.
Diving under water doesn't work properly.
Enemies often get stuck and kill themselves thanks to their area of effect spells.
I could go on, but there's no room left to type.
I'm sure Bethesda is ashamed (or should be) of this game. A black page in their history. It's like an alpha version of something that might have been fun to play if they ever bothered to finish it. It's mind-boggling why they released this in the state it's in. Even patches didn't help.
People who give this game 4 or even 5 stars are out of their mind.
Battlespire is certainly an oddity in the Elder Scrolls series. However, unless you really want to experience this game for yourself, stay away and save yourself the frustration of playing this. The controls are odd (which is a product of its time) but can be sanitized somewhat. The game is buggy, so expect a lot of getting stuck in walls and going out of bounds and other such things. Also, if you mess up too much a game-breaking bug will break your saves and make you unable to progress past level 5. The gratuitous nudity and the poor writing also makes this feel more like a fangame made by hormonal teenagers rather than an official game in the series. It is an ugly game and the sound and music is awful. Especially level 5 wanted to make me puncture my ears to rid myself of the torment.
It does however have an interesting idea: The ability to talk to the enemies and maybe even convince them to help you out or give you extra information. However, this is not enough to save it from being awful. It's a slog from start to finish and it ends anticlimactically and the only feeling of satisfaction is the feeling that it's finally over.
