Description

For years, you have trained to become an Imperial Battlemage, learning the ways of magic and combat to serve and defend the Emperor. Now, as your final test, you must complete the dreaded Battlespire, facing the challenges that lie within. As you enter the proving ground, however, something doesn’t feel right. You soon discover that Mehrunes Dagon, a Daedra Lord, has invaded and ravaged the Battlespire, killing all in his wake. You are the last hope and although ill-equipped and unprepared, it's up to you to stop Dagon’s plan and restore the Battlespire to Imperial control.

Originally envisioned as an expansion for The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, this installment was instead released by Bethesda as a stand-alone title. Although still within the Elder Scrolls world and brimming with many loved elements, Battlespire is unique in several aspects; rather than open-world exploration, the game emphasises survival, taking players through 7 levels, including various realms of Oblivion. There are also no shops or merchants, leaving players to salvage whatever they can from their fallen foes. Full character and stat customisation are still a key component of gameplay, as is the ability to craft spells on the fly and the game is full of the lore and characterisation for which the series’ is renowned. Can you defeat Dagon and prove you are worthy of serving the Emperor?

Peak 90s action RPG

In 1997, most games were released on Windows 95+. Not Battlespire. TES Legends: Battlespire promised 3dfx accelerated graphics using the TES: Daggerfall engine. Neither 3dfx acceleration (due to memory limitations of the Voodoo1 series) nor Win95 support were part of Battlespire. Instead, a "focused" action RPG with strange dialogue choices was the result. The environments were relatively gorgeous for the time; however, the gameplay was clunky and downright frustrating. After many, many failed attempts at this game I used a walkthrough guide and was able to complete it amazingly enough. I'm reluctant to recommend it to anyone. If you are a fan of Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, etc. I would encourage exploring Daggerfall and trust that experience to be superior to what Battlespire has to offer. Battlespire (and Redguard) was at a time in Bethesda's history when the emerging technologies promised new opportunities and the development studio was not ready to abandon the success brought by Daggerfall and the antique technology driving it. Stick with Morrowind and the Elder Scrolls titles after it. Battlespire is a curious detour and not worth the time nor money.

A Fantasitc, if Buggy, Classic

I may be in the minority, but Battlespire is my absolute favorite Elder Scrolls game, period. The lore, the silly dialogue, the beautiful-ugly mid-to-late 90s graphics, it's far and away worth it to pick up!

Plays Like Original to an extent

For the most part it plays like the original. I only have two issues. 1. the old cheat (yes I said cheat) during character creation of buying potions for 60 points, save class, exit game, load class and sell potions pack for 600 points no longer works. 2. playing on a laptop my F1-12 keys are dual function so casting mapped spells is challenging wish they had coded a remap option of the F keys to the number row for the sake of the laptop gamer that did not exist during this games original release.

Mediocre Action for TES Fanatics

Battlespire's original release marked a leap forward in graphics and art design for the series. However, even its best aspects would be difficult to appreciate by most players today. The gameplay is a watered-down dungeon crawl. Combat feels clumsy and is sometimes unsatisfying. The game does not offer worthwhile opportunities for role-playing outside of a Battlemage-like class with a complimentary player race choice. Several standard RPG character statistics can be neglected with no penalty. This suggests that Battlespire could have benefitted from forcing players to play with Battlemage attributes, rather than offer a false sense of freedom. Eventually I found myself enjoying the gameplay under these constraints. There did remain critical bugs that harshly impacted my experience. Also, the multiplayer component was uninteresting. The art direction of Battlespire is generally appropriate. There is a constant supply of strange and eccentric demon sprites to observe throughout the campaign. It can be gratifying to see a difficult enemy phase out of existence during their death animation. The early-3D era graphics offer some charm, aside from the serious glitches associated with level geometry. While the player character sprites can be nicely drawn, they can later get overwhelmed with ugly equipment sprites. The music is serviceable for the eerie atmosphere of the environments. It mostly consists of droning ambiance or is outright absent. The sound design is also acceptable, helping the combat to function. The story is straightforward, perhaps too much for what is considered a role-playing experience. There are a couple choices to make, but they don't affect the story meaningfully. The lore building is what drives the narrative experience, specifically for fans of the Daedra Princes and related demonic lurkings. Without the association with the franchise, this game could have been labeled shovelware. Battlespire is only recommended for dedicated fans of TES.

Boredomspire

What do you do when you just released the successor to an epic open world RPG and the next installment is still quite far away? Right - you create a cheap and quickly programed spin-off, slap the IP "Elder Scrolls" on it and that's how you get garbage like Boredomspire- uh I mean Battlespire. No open world, just one dungeon. Normally that is good (I love a good dungeon crawler), but this one actually sucks - proven by mediocre to poor reviews and being a commercial failure when it came out. So when this came out in '98, it was already was outdated on a technical level. Of course it came with a buttload of bugs - it wouldn't be a Bethesda if it didn't feature bugs, now would it?! and extremely braindead enemy AI. Enemies clip through walls and ignore you, you'd think Bethesda would have learned after Buggerfall. Well, they didn't. The only positive aspects this game has to offer are some good puzzles and the detailed character creation. But that's not enough to save this from oblivion - where it belongs!
