My Disappointment is Easily Patched
There are some quick easy improvements to the game that will change my impression from a 2 star to a 5 star. 1) Add more keymapping functions/options such as a key for "previous army" 2) Add more mousemapping options to allow the click commands to be like classic AoW1 (left click selects army AND initiates movement, right click to unselect) 3) Include tech trees and "build paths" for towns: instead of having to reselect each step of a build ("store house", "bath house", etc.) show the end result and the milestones toward the finished product. Allow the player to select the finished product and let the city automatically figure out everything between. Add visual previews for what the city upgrades do: if I want to develop an additional hex of domain around my settlement or increase gold per turn, when I hover over the option show me a preview of the upgrade on top of the city. 4) Add a feature to play in classic low-graphics 2D sprite mode. Fix the stitching problem with the main menu panorama (witnessed issue on three different computers). The above are quality-of-life, non-functional changes. Here are recommendations for functional changes: 1) If I want to move a unit and the AI is moving something at the same time, so long as there is no conflict between movements, don't make me wait to move! The game isn't lagging in a computational sense but I absolutely feel the lag of waiting on hidden movements before seeing my spell cast or my units move. Fix it. 2) Do something about the AI stalemate where the solution is just to build city after city and wait 200 turns for your economy and research to out-pace the AI. 3) Allow your leader to be a functional melee super-weapon (as per classic AoW1) 4) Fix the necromancer imbalance and give some love to dreadnaughts and halflings Overall the game is enjoyable but just shyly of creating a remarkable experience that I would recommend for others to jump into as well. Small changes would completely change this!
