I got the the end of Return to Zork (following a walkthrough most of the time to be honest) and the bridge at the end did not raise up high enough to cross despite me throwing every item at it. I googled it and here it ends up the last patch for the game broke the bridge at the end, and GOG is obviously using the last patch.

I tried all the tricks to get around this like going back and getting money, mice and hay, but no go, bridge still does not raise all the way up. I ended up watching the ending on youtube.

So... GOG should revert to a previous version or something, game is broken.
Did you fill in a support thing with GOG while you were at it?
I sent them the exact same text as the original post, yes.
As an ex-QA tester, I can't believe this bug was not noticed before release...

...twice.
I just asked the QA guys about this; they didn't have any problems finishing the game. It sounds like it's either your system or else there's still something that you need to do before you can finish the game.

Sorry I can't be of any further help there, but I've never played this particular Zork myself.
I had the same issue - even went through the game a second time making sure I kept everything in my inventory, but to no avail. I also noticed that is bug that other forums have noted exists, but which no one seems to have a solution for.

It's a common bug, far from exclusive to my system, with the latest patch. Google it.

I may have been imprecise; they said that while the bug did occur for one of 'em, it was something that they could work around by going back to visit the cow (I don't believe I'm spoiling anything here), which is the usual fix for this. So while the bug is, indeed, common enough, the fact that you weren't able to get past it even after you went back to try and work your way around the issue is.

The only other advice I've been able to find about this on the 'net is load up an old save from before you've started to try and raise the bridge and attempt it again. Sorry to hear you've been having problems with it.

Yeah, I went back to the cow. I also went back for more coins.

I have a ton of saves so maybe I will try again from further back, but really I already watched the ending on youtube so it would only be to see how bad the issue is for you.
I've always wondered if this had anything to do with the extra blank inventory space you can sometimes get if you try to leave canuk's shack with something you shouldn't.
I finished Zork a few weeks back, and while I had a tough time figuring out how to do the bridge, I didn't really have any issues when it came to the items.

===== Slight Spoiler Warning =====

I have to ask, you didn't abandon or otherwise destroy any items did you? Don't forget you can go back and get more steak from the fridge as many times as you need, and you can get more hay as many times as you need too. You didn't give your coin to Charon on the way back did you? How about the items you left when you reforged the disk?

======End Spoiler ======

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not convinced this is 100% a bug.

I got this game when it was originally released. Couldn't finish the game because of the bridge problem, no matter what I did. I bought the game again a few years later, hoping for some reason it would be fixed....same problem. Now, many many years later, GOG releases a version, I buy it the instant I see it, just so I can finish the game and get past the bridge (the cd versions I bought years ago no longer work on the computer) I can't get past the bridge, I've played the game 6 times? Trying all the different things already mentioned in this post...it's not a hard game, walk-through or not (of which I've read at least 3 different versions of a walk-through)...so, a fix would be nice, I can't imagine it being something wrong with how I'm playing the game, it's not that hard of a game.
i couldn't finish this the first time... but i played the game from scratch again and was able to... i didn't pick up the coins from the zorkmid tree after striking and went back for them later after i tossed my original batch of coins. i also got the bat guano and meat again..
I didn't run into this problem at all, I was actually wondering how the mechanics behind the bridge work at all - does it need to get everything you hold when entering the Citadel of Zork to be thrown at it? After reading around here, it just seems you should pick up everything you can see laying around. Just do that, and you should be fine - luckily there isn't a weight limit in this game, and when I played through it, I had just enough items with me on the first try.
Spoiler?

I thought I had run into this problem. But then I realized I hadn't thrown the steak in yet. Problem solved! (Also, I hadn't thrown the rock in, and the coin that allows you passage on the boat)

Hope this is helpful!

it felt good to finish the game!
