I want to play using a different map. But I don't want to have to play on Hard or Superhuman to play one of the big city maps.

According to this article, I can simply rename the files to achieve this, but there's one small problem. The files I need to rename are on the .iso image within the .bin file. :/
It is possible to play a different on the map from difficulty level (for example, playing the Hard map on Novice difficulty) by opening the /UFODATA folder and renaming the files CITYMAP_ and CITYMAP_.BLD (remember to backup the files first!). 1 is Novice, 5 is Superhuman.
While I could use IsoBuster, I feel like I'm missing something else. I would need to put everything back the way it was, except for the new city files, if I were to tinker with the image. How should I do this? And is there a way to simply add and overwrite a couple files in the image?

This is possible, but requires a lot more effort than simply copying map files as palette and other things vary slightly between cities

You can change maps using tacedit, the official editor used to make the game back in the day

This utility is still around if you search via duckduckgo or search engine of your choice

StrategyCore also contains a repository of Apocalypse Editors to help with map-editing

Finally, one of the objectives we have for OpenApoc is to add support for new maps and accessing all maps at all difficulty levels. However, we are in alpha, so expect lots of bugs

PLEASE ALSO BE AWARE THE DIFFICULTY IS PARTLY SET BY THE CITY SIZE AND FORM
SUPERHUMAN MAP ON NOVICE SETTINGS IS STILL GOING TO BE MUCH HARDER THAN TYPICAL NOVICE
