I can't figure out why but XCOM is crashing my PC, straight up causing the BSOD. My PC specs are as follows:

CPU = i7-7700K
Graphics Card = EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC Gaming ACX 2.0+
Power Supply = SHARK ATX-650-N12S 650W 12V Black Power Supply
Motherboard = Asus MAXIMUS IX HERO
Installed RAM = 16 GB
Hard Disk = 500 G Toshiba DT01ACA050

The game just randomly crashes. I found an old forum post saying that EU's full screen was borked, and playing it on border less windowed mode should help. It seems to have solved the problem on EU, but when I play EW it still crashes. Crashes less frequently in border less window, but still crashes too frequently to be just a random bug. It can happen when I'm doing research, when I'm in a mission, during a cutscene... Just seems to randomly happen.

That can happen if you have too many saved games. Take the extras out every once in a while either by deleting them or cutting and pasting into a safe directory somewhere else.

It can also happen that you get a forever freeze or one so long that it looks like a crash and might as well be one. That can happen for the reason above or sometimes, I think, because you have too many browser windows open or other memory hog items going while you play. Browsers for instance will suck up resources loading videos and ads, etc, even when minimized.

turn off autosave.
Manual save and keep 3 save files max

I bought the game a week ago.

Now finished my first campaign on iron man mode. During that time the game crashed 2 times. Once I was alt-tabbing and doing something else. During that time the game had just disappeared. The second crash happened on the last mission. I think the boss was trying to do something and it just crashed. I loaded the saved game, finished the fight and it did not crash again.

There seems to be some resolution and full screen issues. First I tried to put it in full HD 1920 resolution, but somehow it did not work too well. Some of the graphics were in wrong places like in the strategic map you could not see the top right nation because the interface blocked it. And strangely the automatically forced the resolution to lower one and it also forced it to 4:3 aspect ratio with those black bars on left and right.

Disable autosave...

It crashes at a very specific but repeatable point for me.
I have had dozens of saves and am maybe 3/4 of the way through.

I have:
Deleted dozens of saves down to just 3.
Unticked Autosave.
Unticked framerate smoothing.
Unticked V-Sync.
Set all the video settings to low.

None of these changes make a difference.

I reach a terror-site warning, go to select my team and OK it, then the video runs which show the troop carrier launch. The moment the video ends, the screen returns back to my troop selection screen and freezes (instead of showing the globe and the troop carrier travelling to the site). I'm in windowed mode and clicking the X to close does nothing - I have to end the task in Task Manager.

It never seems to get to the point where it shows the globe.

I first tried loading an older save and progressing back to where I was, but it freezes at the same exact point on the loading of the terror mission in South Africa again. Annoyed as not far from the end game.

PS - If I ignore the Terror mission (which leads to South Africa withdrawing from the project) and scan for activity until the next event occurs, I get an Abduction warning with 2 sites. It doesn't matter which site I pick, I select my team, click "Launch Mission", the video plays and then the screen changes back to show my squad selection window and freezes.

If you click twice to skip the video sequence, you get to the freeze screen again, just quicker :( .
