Just bought the Terran War Pack - Yeh!

Are the official bonus packs included in the GOG download
or must they be gotten from Egosoft ??

They are not included and have to be downloaded from Egosoft. They do however work on top of GoG's installer without issues.

Official bonus packs? What do they add?

Various community scripts which make your life easier and have been vetted by EgoSoft. I recommend installing them even if you choose not to use most of the content in the end (at least it will be there if you ever decide that you need it).

P.S. For now, I've only ever used the Dockware Manager (which is darn useful to an end-game player), but some people use the Missile Defense Mosquito script and CLS/Commercial Agents too.

It is a collection of community patches/mods (and more), being put together with the official approval of egosoft and not modifying your status as 'cheater' (some say so ;) )

Those mods/patches help you with certain functions of the game, like better automated trading and so on.

On egosoft you can find those bonuspacks for download. They do have a complete description with them

where do i install the bonus material? The egosoft site wants to install it into a file containg steam directories but mine is GOG version?

You just replace the path in the installer with wherever you've configured Galaxy to put your games (I assume you're using Galaxy, otherwise surely you would know where your install directory was?). You can see it in Galaxy through your settings under "Game installation folder", alternatively go to the game, select "More" and from the drop down go to "Manage Installation->Show Folder".

If you're not using galaxy, it's wherever you installed the game.

I just got GOG's X3 Terran War pack for linux and succesfully installed the official bonus pack from the egosoft site, following the MacOSX instructions from the following topic:

The wine used is wine32 (on an up to date debian 10.5 for x86_64)

By Jove, I never added the bonus pack instructions to the Linux/Wine install thread, now did I?
I guess that's what 5 years between threads will do to your memory.
