Got annoyed by the nonexistant range of the vampire bite recently, which had been working just fine beforehand. Analysed what has changed -> I switched to paladin and shurikens got unequipped.
The solution sounds ridiculous but you need to keep some throwing weapons equipped to use the bite effectively. Tested with ordinary knives - works just fine.
