I've found all four monkey idols...the last one being in the area accessed via the kitchen elevator. But now I'm stuck in the area and cannot for the life of me find my way out. The elevator from the kitchen returned to the kitchen after I got off. And in the three levels found here, there's no way out. There is one wall which is darker than the rest, but no obvious way to open it...IF it's the way out. Help?!!

If it's the elevator with the button to activate, unfortunately, you can become quite stuck. Clicking on it twice by accident activates it twice, causing it to return to the original position. If you have vanish, portal, or call of home, you have a possibility to escape. Otherwise, a reload is the only option. This is quite an old (and buggy) game, so keeping extra saves is very helpful.
