Anyone else here tried to run Wizardry 8 through Wine emulation on an Ubuntu install? For me, the game itself works, but refuses to properly display any of the cinema sequences. Worse, upon exiting the game my desktop resolution isn't reset, leaving me in a very low-res mode that I have to physically kill my X server to get out of.

Any suggestions?
I've made an install script for Playonlinux, see here. The videos work fine for me.

The game crashes on quit indeed, sadly I haven't found a solution. Though you can do better than killing your X server:
Alt+F2 then type:
xrandr -s your_resolution

Edit: Or better, enable virtual desktop in your Wine config and set it to your screen's resolution.
