Hi all!

Love the GOG.com community and time to contribute :)

I'm Mau1wurf1977 and my hobby is DOS gaming. I purchase pretty much every new DOS based GOG.com release and spend time getting these games to run on a real 386/486/Pentium computer. My channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Mau1wurf1977.

Wing Commander is another GOG.com release that is missing INSTALL.EXE which allows you to configure the sound options.

You have two choices:

a) Search the Internet for the game and nick the missing INSTALL.EXE
b) edit WINGCMDR.CFG (For Wing Commander and Secret Missions 1) or CRUSADE.CFG (for Secret MISSIONS 2) as per list below:

!! If the Secret Missions 1 don't work anymore (you get a black screen with white text telling you that Secret Missions 1 is not installed, this is because the INSTALL.EXE (if you used this), or you, didn't add the z at the end. The z indicates that Secret Missions 1 is installed. !!

Sound options for WINGCMDR.CFG and CRUSADE.CFG

No Sound:
v z

PC Speaker:
v p z

Adlib: or Sound Blaster: The game does not offer digital sound effects or speech, just FM sounds and music.
v a904 z

Roland MT-32:
v r z

Mau1wurf1977: Snip...
I don't know the diffrence between a904 and a552 which also works. The A is for adlib. Soundblaster supports the adlib standard. But the way you posted it is misleading as the game does not take advantage of soundblaster's extra features.

How about the other options?
v and z

I can tell you off the bat that v is for VGA graphics. (technically MCGA)
E would be EGA but the installer is needed to convert the data files over.

The Z, i have no idea

The list I posted shows what the game puts in the CFG file on a real DOS machine. I used INSTALL.EXE and selected each sound card.

I never got a552, so not sure where this is coming from.

When running INSTALL.EXE you get to choose between Adlib and Sound Blaster. As for being misleading, take that up with EA / Origin. I guess they wanted Sound Blaster owners to feel special :)

But I get your point so I combined the two options, how's that?

z option I have explained in my first post as well.

I didn't cover graphics as this thread is about sound options.

Sorry I missed the Z.

As to this being a sound thread only, you discussed Z, you might as well cover it all as it's two extra sentences :P Relabel the thread Wingcommander.CFG file explained.

I actually got a552 from the install myself. I'd assume dma/irq related.

Unfortunately threads can't be renamed :( At least I couldn't find a way...

Wing Commander doesn't use DMA or IRQ as it only really supports Adlib which just needs an address. But you never know. What resources was your card set to?

Mine are always A220 I7 D1

I'll play with it in a little bit. i don't have it installed right now. I actually don't think that's it. A good test would be to keep your SB settings and just plug in a552 into your WC.CFG and see if there is a difference. If you don't hear anything then it is the address, irq, dma. But when i recommended it to a lot of people when wc1 was released on GoG it worked for them

How about just plug in different numbers? see if there is a difference?

Sound Blaster allows the OPL chip to be addressed at ports 0x388-9 (decimal 904-5) for Adlib compatibility, but also at an offset of 8-9 ports above the "A" value in SET BLASTER - where the typical value of A220 results in ports 0x228-9 (decimal 552-3) being used.

This means that a552 and a904 should work the same. The difference would only matter in a real computer with only an Adlib card, where a904 is the only setting that would work.
