When I try to chose one of the options during the first cutscene( or try to skip the scene alltogether), the game frezees and my computer bips like crazy.
There is almost nothing that I can do at this point. Sometimes CTRL+ALT+DEL brings me back to the desktop and I can kill the game from there, but most of the times I have to do a hard reset to get my computer back in working order.
Since there are no settings or config file to edit for this game I don't know what I can do to get it to work properly...

I just bought this game and I'm having the exact same issue. Get to the point in the opening cinematic when someone approaches Mark Hamill at the bar, you're presented with a choice but the game completely freezes and there's relentless beeping. What the heck?

I had this issue my first time running the game from the GOG launcher. The keyboard and mouse wouldn't work for choice selection, and I got beeping when I tried to do anything with them. But it turned out I was still able to make choices with the joystick and select them by pressing the trigger. Then when I got into the first part of gameplay, I didn't have any sound and keyboard commands still weren't working. I ended up dying that time, and from the post-death menu I was able to start a new game and everything worked normally the second time around. After exiting the game, I had a browser open with a string of my attempted keyboard commands in the search bar. So it seems like it's an issue with the game not having full focus in Windows.

When I start the game now from the GOG Galaxy launcher, there's no sound until I click my mouse once (I've made a savegame so it's starting at the load game menu instead of the opening cutscenes). When I launch it instead from the shortcut in the Wing Commander IV folder, there's sound right away without having to click anything. So that might be something to try if you're getting this issue when running the game from the launcher, it seems like the launcher isn't giving the game focus.

I ran into this issue too, what fixed it for me was Alt+TAB to go to another window, then back to the game. Then I could select a choice.

This is a codec-related issue, guys. had the same problem. Installed the last klite mega codec pack, now the game works like a charm.
