herecomethe2000: The actual fix is to open the WINGCOMDR.CFG And replace the "R" with "a552" that will change it to soundblaster.
Thanks! Worked great...somewhat disappointed that GOG couldn't be bothered to fix a very simple problem...
Well I wouldn't define it as a problem, just a limitation of the default dosbox. Thing is they set the game to use the Roland sound card which is vastly superior to the digitized soundblaster of the age. Only default dosbox doesn't support it. For thoes that are slightly tech savy, instead I highly suggest people take a look at Taewong's build which which is patched with munt. Which has almost a perfect emulation of late.

google search on how to enable it.

If you use that then the .cfg file should be set to R

GrimCW: seriously, i thought GoG checked for these kinds of openly obvious bugs and problems :/
or do they only check for launching to the menu now?

xwormwood: Well spoken.
If they advert the next release of EA classics, and offering the one and only Wing Commander, how in hell can this slip through?
GOG did a bad job with this release. As much as i love the most releases here, i have to say, that they did a bad and sloppy job with this release.
this isn't the only one i've had issues with lately.
a Zork GI, and KQ7 and 8 have issues as well.
KQ 7/8 i can't play unless in windowed mode, and ZGI has a similar issue, but won't window on some systems.
i'll grant they work, but some bugs are just unavoidable :p
i can deal with the KQ7/8 ones, but the WC1 (now fixed) and ZGI ones are kinda game breaking for some (in my case in ZGI i can't play it on my laptop at all, desktop is fine, so no major complaint, but my laptop is where i stow most of these awesome oldies (despite its powerful enough to blast through Crysis 2 with its DX 11 patch :p i love this system..))

gog's still great, and i'm not going anywhere anytime soon thats for sure.
theres a fix out there, i just haven't found them yet! :)

Dear GOG forum manager.

How can you flag this problem as solved when the answer is that the customer has manually do what GOG promised as done when they advertised the game?

Why can't i read here nothing like "sorry, our bad, please redownload the game, we fixed the problem"?

Are you aware that you scare customers away with releases like this one?
I really don't understand you and this behaviour.

Thanks. Even though i don't feel able enough to work this out i'm grateful for the hint.
The question remains, why GOG didn't bother to offer the game with this dosbox version.
All customers would have been so thankful to play the game with the best possible sound.
Instead we got this version, which doesn't even start on many computers, and if it starts, only with a bad "sound".

I had a similar problem and this is how I solved it:
I opened up dosboxWC.conf in notepad and started to tweak the settings. When I first download it I had horrible sound, the game was way too fast, and the joystick wasn't working at all.
Here are the files I changed and I hope it will work out for all of you that need help. Backup your dosboxWC.conf before you try my settings
In the last lines I also tried to enable the cheats but that hasn't worked so far. Any way good luck to all of you.

under dosbox I changed:

language=
machine=svga_et3000
captures=capture
memsize=16

Under cpu I changed
core=simple
cputype=386_slow
cycles=1500
cycleup=1000

Under Joystick I changed:
joysticktype=4axis
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false
cycledown=1000

Good Luck
not sure why you would want cpu to be 386_slow. Set it on auto at least also set core to dynamic or auto, both are far better.

As to why they didn't ship it with a munt version. Simple answer they can't. But you can do what you like in that department. It's not hard to setup, just a bit of reading.

The file WINGCOMDR.CFG appears to be corrupted. It has two letters and some spaces. What's it supposed to look like?

Try this. Right click the notepad program then select run as administrator. Then in notepad do a file/open and then open and save it in note pad.

You could also copy the file to your desktop (should not have permission issues here) and then update it, save it then copy it back to the folder replacing the file.

Let me know if you have problems.

Thats it... and one of the letters should be the r. just delete the r and put the a552.. That should do it!! Probably best to use notepad.

Man am I glad I read through this topic. The "a552" worked perfectly. The "music and sound problem" was aggravating beyond belief. I know GOG could've fixed this before dishing out the game, but regardless, as of right now, it works perfectly (thanks to some help) and I only spent 6 frickin dollars to enjoy an experience WAY ahead of it's time.

I'd really wish GOG would spend some more time on QC; this issue should have been noticed if they'd one run the final release ONCE !

I still remember this Moto Racer-crack thing...

If i have to fix s**t myself, i could settle for some abandonware site as well!
Thanks for the fix on this one.

An amended installer would be a very nice thing to see. But I don't want an apology from GOG, I just want the files to work. And having been a PC gamer for 25 years now, I accept that rolling up my sleeves and figuring some stuff out on my own/relying on my fellow gamers to ferret out solutions is now and has always been part of the hobby.

If that's not acceptable...your Xbox 360 awaits!
Aww, come on, no one of us is here because the xbox is broken. I customized my autoexec before i could ride a bike.

Just everything available here can be found for free, so when i decide to choose GOG instead i want a service, and the very basic service i expect is the game ready to run w/o any fixing needed.

GOG always claim to be about "the love for good old games" and be "gamers like us". So hell yeah, if they do care so much about classic games and classy gamers, they supposed to do better!

You, sir or madam, are a god among men! Thank you! Now I can play one of the best games of all time again. Childhood, here I come!
