I have loved Privateer since it was first released way back when. It was a constant install back in the day. Then as soon as GOG released it I bought it and it has been a constant install on my Mac too.

Are there any similar modern games? I played Privateer 2 back in the day and hated it. I don't remember why to be honest, but I just remember it being so different that I didn't care for it. Anything like the first game around? The combat, the ship upgrades, the trading, and the options to be a simple trader, a pirate, or a good guy following the plot.

I'd say Rebel Galaxy Outlaw (also on GOG) but I'm not sure it can work on Mac natively.
It's almost a modern clone of the first Privateer.
Privateer 2 sucks, even with darkfix the game is just a big ball of frankly confounding game design decisions.
