Tried to shoot down a talon with my default laser, and it was understandably useless. Then I bought the Meson Blaster (as per the manual's suggestion), and I still can't get a talon's shields down before I run out out energy and the talon flies away, and by the time the talon gets back in range and I'm recharged his shields are fully charged again. Do the weapons eventually get good enough to do any damage, or is there some core gameplay mechanic I'm missing? Getting tired of constantly trading/doing recon missions with no action:(

Getting Engine Upgrades effectively increases your ship's power plant. This means you won't run out of power so quickly, or at all even.

2 Meson Blasters is good near the start, then later the Tachyon Cannon. You can do a lot of damage with them and they both have relatively low draw on power. You do need to balance your ship's power with what you are using.

If you want lots of surplus power, you need the engine level 1 higher than your shield level, having the two in balance means you can potentially run out of power shooting too much or using your afterburner. Also near the start expect to run from many fights until you can buy some better gear!
Also try to get two Missile Launchers as soon as you can. Two ImageRec missiles as a Talon approaches will generally kill him instantly.
As i told you in the other post, TACHYONS are the best option, and as boct 1584 said, double missile launchers...
Best way to start with the tarsus is
2x meson blasters
2x torpedo launchers (way better power, just need to be accurate)
Shields 1
Tungsten Armour
Engine upgrade 1
afterburners

Then you gotta grind for a bit, upgrade to jump drive, then Hunter Mk3 radar, repair droid and ecm level 2
After that, for main quest proceed to new detroit bar. But you'll want a better ship
just bought the games hours ago. going in head to head with torpedoes do the trick for me.
Just downloaded Privateer2 and the install went fine but can't adjust video and no options for setting up joystick???....Did I miss something?

Privateer 2 has no resolution options (it always runs at 640x480). Joysticks are supported but can't be remapped in-game; you can use the DOSBox Mapper (Ctrl+F1) to change the controls.
Something else you can do is reduce shield strength when going for the kill ('s' key). Charging shields doesn't exact an energy penalty, but maintaining the strength of shields does.
