I can vouch for the wcdx patches as far as Wing Commander I is concerned. I'm currently running the Klrathi Saga version of Wing Commander 3, which works ok enough, but alt-tab doesn't work so far.

Dean478: I always felt the originals were superior except for audio. The best part about the Kilrathi Saga was the music and sound effects. The sound effects were updated and sounded like future games. The music was just fantastic as well.

Getting it to run in Windows 10 is just a pain. And when it does, it just goes like a bat out of hell. The originals in Dosbox are far more stable.

BrandeX: Absolutely not.

Copy/paste the files from https://github.com/Bekenn/wcdx/releases into the game's directory and it works flawlessly in all versions of Windows.
isnt it a bit more involved than simply copying and pasting them over?

QUOTE:

"How to use it:
Install the game. You can use the installer from the CD if you wish, but my preferred method is to simply take the WC1 folder and copy it somewhere. You can also use the PC Gamer release, available from the CIC Downloads section. If you use the installer, be sure to go back and copy the streams directory afterward. This will allow you to run the game without the CD, and (more importantly) is required in order for the music patch to work.
Install the Secret Missions add-on pack. Once again, you can use the included installer, or you can simply copy the files over. If you choose to do it manually, note that every file that isn't an executable (.exe) belongs in the gamedat directory.
Copy wcdx.dll, wcpatch.exe, and patchmusic.exe into the directory containing Wing1.exe.
Open a command prompt and run this command: wcpatch Wing1.exe Wing1_wcdx.exe
For Secret Missions support, repeat step 4 for SM1.EXE, SM2.EXE and TRANSFER.EXE.
Run this other command: patchmusic streams\mission.str
Try it out! Double-click on Wing1_wcdx to start the game. If everything works the way you expect it to, you can delete your old Wing1.exe and rename Wing1_wcdx back to Wing1."

The person who wrote hat wrote a bunch of dumb crap with copy and renaming, in case it doesn't work. It works.

copy/paste the files to the install directory. run the patcher and overwrite the originals with the same name, it works perfectly.
yeah, no i got it to work no issues, i was aware of the proper procedure, i was just wanting to clarify for someone else who perhaps may look at this in the future and think that a mere copy paste of the files would suffice,

up till that point it hadnt been made all too clear

Sorry, Noob here.
I Copy/pasted as described, but how exactly do I run this patcher? Doubble-clicking it just opens up a window for a split-second and then nothing....
What am I doing wrong?

I´m using windows 10, in case it´s important.
In a command prompt window.
Add me to the "Can we have the Kilrathi Saga version too please ?"

I'm just baffled GoG never went and released this version even though AFAIK they could have had. Yeah KS has its pros and cons, but the simple solution was to give people the choice of which version to play. If X-Wing and TIE Fighter can have THREE DIFFERENT VERSIONS available, how hard can it be to do the same for Wing Commander ?

And really going and playing it in Dos Box when the KS works flawlessly and natively even in Windows 10 just feels mindboggling.
Best way to let GOG know about this is to vote it up the wishlist, link below.

https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/wing_commander_the_kilrathi_saga
The Kilrathi saga executable for WC3 works perfectly with the DDraw patch on a Win8.1x64 PC, trhough EA could spill some beans and give GoG/CDPR the opportunity to use the SRC to update the Launchers prior to WC4

also Dark Omen since they still has the Source Code hidden somewhere on their archives
Still would like to see the KS versions...
