This doesn't apply to the DOS version, but if the Windows version of Wing Commander 4 feels more over the top difficult than usual, try locking your FPS to 60 or 30. I used Rivatuner to do this. Before I locked the FPS I was running into problems with stuff like enemies spamming missiles 10 seconds into reaching a nav point, wingman dying almost instantly and very wonky hit registration and other weird game logic (i.e. enemies just stopping for no real reason). Unsurprisingly, I imagine this has something to do with running a game designed for Windows 95 on modern hardware.

After locking the FPS, the problems with difficulty mostly subsidized and I was able to complete missions like Tyr (one of the most challenging) on the first try. WC4 is a difficult game, but like I figured that it shouldn't be this difficult.

Edit: I should add that locking the FPS made the controls feel a lot more responsive as well. So that's another plus.
