Someone posted this in another thread and I've found it to be excellent advice:
Personally I'd recommend getting dual missile launchers ASAP. Two IR or FF missiles is usually enough to instantly destroy a fresh Talon. With 20 missiles you can take out 10 talons effortlessly. Dogfighting in a Tarsus with meson blasers is an excercise in frustration, Talons are just too fast and you don't have enough burst damage to kill them quickly.

Get two missile launchers and then load up on the attack/defend/patrol missions in Troy until you get enough for a jump drive. Then grab 2-3 cargo missions going to the same destination to make 30k per trip. You'll be fully outfitted in no time. Missiles aren't free, but they kill Talons so quickly you can do twice as many attack missions in the time it would otherwise take to dogfight them.
It's been working out well for me thus far.

Start with double torpedo launchers until you can afford double missile. Wait for the talon to do its straight run at you, fire two torpedos and start looking for a new target.
The other important things to get when you can are AFTERBURNERS. Most enemies will only pursue you for a relatively short distance. If you have afterburners you can usually escape a fight. Engine upgrades allow you to after burn for longer.

ALSO: You can talk your way out of fights in Privateer. If you are attacked by pirates or the Kilrathi, repeatedly sending the third communication choice to them (about 4-7 times depending on your initial standing with them) will cause them to go neutral and then friendly temporarily. (Only those particular ships, only while you're at that nav point) The Retros do NOT respond to this, nor will patrols that find you with contraband. It's a neat way to get close to the kilrathi ships, and it makes landing at asteroid-surrounded pirate bases A LOT easier.
