Is there any way to get into the main plot (recovery of the Steltek gun) without going through the Tayla-Lynch-etc. contraband sequence? Been there, done that, looking for another plot route if one exists.

It's only way, unfortunately. But if you don't want to shoot Militia/Confeds and you already have Centurion with upgrades then you can just hit afterburner and run like hell. After every such mission you can use your charm and convince every met M/C ship that you're friendly (press "c" for communication and then "3" for most friendly answer/call).
As stated above, there is 0 (like zero) flexibility in the original Privateer.

You simply have to go through this... for extra challenge you can try using different ship instead of the obligatory Centurion (I was surprised, that Galaxy is rather usable, though I always ended up at somepoint in Centurion anyway).

Comparing plots of the original Privateer and Righteous Fire is like comparing night and day... RF is so much better in almost every aspect (well, with the expection of lenght).

Now, if someone with dared to return the cut content of the original Privateer - there were supposed to be semi randomized missions for pirates etc., but they were cut from the release (for whichever reason). There are still traces of those in text files within the game (and after reading them, many of the seemingly random bartender tips suddenly start to make sense...)
Anyone know how do deploy the Nuke 'Em module? I think ALT + s is supposed to do it, but all it seem to do is confirm that I have it. Does one target a ship and then press ALT + s? Press ALT + s and then do something to send it on its way?
