I was just curious if it was possible to add the Righteous Fire expansion to this version of Privateer.

I have the game, expansion, and speech pack all in their original boxes and media. I would love to buy this from GOG so I don't have to worry about my originals deteriorating into uselessness and never again be able to play this excellent game. Also, I noticed that this version has the speech from the bartenders and mission givers which sadly the old 3.5" disks did not.

It would be great if it were possible to add in RF to this version, though I have my doubts. If anyone has tried or has any info please let me know!

I dont see why not, the sounds may have to be done manually. My concern would be if GOG has patched it beyond what the expansion works with.
Major show stopper might occur if expansion replaces the gog modified executable and requiring original CD due to that.
Unless I am very much mistaken, RF had its own executable.
Unfortunately, I don't think this will work--Righteous Fire won't know what to do with the later CD version of Privateer available on GOG (which until now always included RF--the folks setting this up just deleted the second executable and the tre file)... it's going to be looking for the significantly different (in terms of files) disk version.
I would tend to agree banditloaf... but the question is still out there for anyone who has bought the GOG version and tried with the disk RF.

How many would buy it if it did work that haven't because of the lack of the expansion?

AFAIR my original CD version has two BAT files: "priv.bat" with "privater.exe" in it, and "rf.bat" with "privater.exe -r" for expansion. If you have original CD then try to copy proper TRE files to catalog made by GOG's installer and try to do "some magic" with DOS-Box settings or something. Right now I don't have access to my original CD version so I'm not 100% sure...

Nice recall! :) Yeah, you're right about the batch files. Although it's "priv.exe", not "privater.exe". I just grabbed my CD copy of the game and had a play with copying over the rf.tre files, mounting a directory containing a copy of the files as a cd-rom etc. Nothing works. Can't even mount the cd directly and load it. Seems that the suspicions are correct and that Gog have had to do a little too much modification to the existing files to make this work easily (not that this was their intention btw, just an unintended side effect. :(

For what it's worth, here's an attachment of the Privateer CD's contents if anyone else has any other suggestions/thoughts...

The game's files are in GAME.GOG. Looks like all it takes is putting rf.exe and rf.tre into there and editing the config a bit. Not too difficult.

HA! It works! :-D

How to add "Righteous Fire" to the game:
1) make sure you have original CD version with RF expansion ;-)
(I've bought mine full CD version in 1997 for c.a. 10 USD),
2) copy files "INITRF.PAK", "RF.CFG", "RF.TRE" to GOG's folder with the game,
3) edit "RF.CFG" - change string to "=D:rf.tre"
4) edit "dosboxPRIV.conf" - at "[autoexec]" section change "priv.exe" to "priv.exe r" (without quotas, of course)
5) unpack "GAME.GOG" file to separate folder (e.g. GAME),
6) copy RF.TRE file to this new folder (from step "5"),
7) make ISO file (name it "GAME.GOG") which will include all files from step "6"; add just files only, without folder,
6) copy this file to GOG's folder with the game,
8) run the game using shortcut on desktop - it will start RF campaign.

If you have SAV file from main campaign you can use it (even if you didn't finish it).

Enjoy! :-D

PS. My tools:
- Total Commander,
- Notepad2,
- 7Zip,
- ImgBurn.

PPS. Hey, GOG guys! Don't delete or censor this topic, please...
Nevermind

Thanks a lot for figuring this out, TPR and Vagabond. The lack of Righteous Fire is the only gripe I have with GOG.com's copy of Privateer.
I have done all that was indicated and the game continues to be the same only difference is that the exe is now priv.exe -r.

Do I need to finish the game or is there something that I am missing.

For original Privateer (1st campaign) you should have this intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJHrdE8xoEk
and game will start in Troy on Achilles, a mining base.

For "Righteous Fire" expansion (2nd campaign) this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJHrdE8xoEk
and game will start in XXN-1927 on Jolson, a pleasure planet.
You can import old save (there is no need to finish 1st campaign) to get your ship, stats and money.

Ok so I guess its not working correctly since both show the same intro
