So, here's the issue.

I have a 1024x768 crt monitor. When I saw the game had an option for that resolution, I thought I was set. Well, even with the large text option, character creation is extremely difficult, almost impossible to read and in game text is pretty small as well. I don't fancy playing the game with my face pressed against the screen, and while I do own a HD TV, the game isn't really gamepad/tv friendly.

So, what are my options? Am I stuck until I get a new monitor?

You can try enlarging the HUD to somewhat help out with this. Go into the game Options menu, then click on the Display button and you should find a slider for HUD Scale. Increasing this should make things larger and more legible, but then you can run into problems with the UI layout overlapping. There's a button you can click to unlock the UI and reposition parts of it around the screen. I've attached an image showing where the button is located and an example of how I enlarged and rearranged the UI to fit better for 1024 x 768.
