To clarify, no I'm not primarily an XP user, but I have one I like using for retro games.

When installing Warlords 3 on XP however, the game refuses to launch for me, immediately crashing and giving the "___ has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" standard crash message, so I can't even get to the title screen or anything like that. Since it's just an instant crash it's hard to say what causes it. Is there anything I can try tweaking or anything that GOG changed to the original release to make it more stable on later operating systems that could potentially kill compatibility on older OSs?

The wrapper used in the GOG release

You can try to delete the ddraw.dll dxcfg.ini and dxcfg.exe files to test it Deleting the ddraw.dll file alone should be enough.

There is also a winmm file and vorbis ogg kind of files, they are the redbook cd audio wrapper files but I ignore if they are compatible with XP or not, or if they are relevant for XP

Removing the winmm file allows it to run. Thank you! I also copied over the winmm file from the Windows version of Heroes of Might and Magic 2 to the Warlords 3 folder and now the CD audio is working too.
