They aren't saving properly.
If I create an Ironman Hero, and then at any point in time go back to the main menu, or exit the game, then try to use them again they aren't there. This is not the case for normal, or tinman, or bronzeman characters.
Which now makes Ironman even harder: Not only can you not die, you have to do it all in one go.

Are you running the game as administrator? If not, try that and see if it helps. If so, then perhaps install to a location other than c:\Program Files\

I am running the game in administrator mode and I installed the game in my D: drive not C:\Program Files\whatever and the problem still occurs. If I make an ironman hero and finish the game I can level him up, and then I cannot select him as if he were dead or deleted. In fact, I don't even have to play a game for this glitch to happen. If I create an ironman hero in Campaign or Skirmish, then go back to the menu and try to continue the campaign or start a new skirmish it will show like the hero wasn't created (this does not happen with other types of heroes).

When I was a kid I loved playing with ironman heroes and this is one of the big reasons I got this game on GoG, I looked all over the internet for a possible solution to this and nothing has come up, I really hope somebody here can help me.

Well, someone will be able to help you, as this is a supported game, so I think your best path here is to log a support request.

I'm afraid WBC2 is the one I don't own on GOG, as I already have the box copy, otherwise I'd try and reproduce this bug. What OS are you running? Hopefully someone with a similar setup will be around to try this out and see if it's a general bug (I don't think many people use Ironman mode because it's such a scary concept, so it may be affecting everyone).

My guess is that there's either a file missing that's needed, or a file that cannot be created or written to (admin permissions should have overridden that). You could try removing the read-only flag from all files. It's not likely to damage anything (though it's always wise to backup first). Just right click on the root folder and select "Properties", uncheck the read-only box, then click OK, then select "apply to all files and subfolders".

Im having the same problem... anyone found a solution yet?
Yeah... you have to make this one a sticky until it is fixed. I have teste most things, but nothing work.

ASUS G73JW, windows 7
I am having the same issue, with my ironman Dark Dwarf Merchant "Emperor Kazl".

Using the Dragon UnPacker program, I was able to get inside of "HeroData.xcr" for Warlords Battlecry II, I was able to find his .hro file inside there!

For reasons I can not fathom, the game is not reading the file, but it appears, from my layman's point of view, to be saving it and probably saving it correctly.

It might be because of the long name + space? I don't know, some older games are weird like that (Age of Empires II HD carried over its problem with long usernames and crashed 'til I changed my steam name to be shorter).

Could you, or anyone else who encounters this thread please log a support request and keep people updated on its progress. I would do so myself, but I don't own the game. If you want this fixed then you need to put it on GOG's radar.
I would also like to know the solution to this. Last time I installed this game, about a year ago, I had the same problem and there were a couple of threads asking for it to be fixed. I hoped it had been fixed by now.

I never had this problem on my physical copy of the game so it's probably some small thing the GoG team overlooked in their release and that can be relatively easily fixed.
ticket created, the easy solution to this is to not play ironman.
I always played Ironman in WBC 3
Now it does not appears in my saves or heroes rooster .
Anyone has found any solution to that ?
I did created a ticket for that problem years ago, and the GOG support team just told me not to play IRONMAN mode. They should not be selling that game if they cannot fix it!
Ran into the same issue as have most in this thread. Did some internet research to try to figure out what may have been causing it.

Found a discussion of the matter on a mod forum for WBC (The Protectors), from 2016:

To summarise, it appears the bug affects both WBC 2 and 3. It appears that both games have an antihack mechanism in place to prevent cheating with ironman saves. Ironman heroes get an entry in HeroData.xcr but also the game attempts to write something to the operating system registry. On Windows, anything that is Vista or newer doesn't seem to permit WBC to write to registry, so with nothing in the registry, the test fails and the hero ends up being treated as deleted, in spite of still being present in HeroData.xcr.

The modders discuss a solution of removing the registry check, but at this point my knowledge of programming and coding is too limited to understand what that would involve, but I hope the present info helps anyone working on finding a (centralised) solution!
