Does DOW DE need mod.io or nexus mods account to get mods to work? or just download and copy into mods folder?

To my knowledge, the game has no online function aside from multiplayer, so you really shouldn't need an account anywhere to make mods work. Just download them, put them in the folder and go. Although an update seems to have messed with one that I'm using, which is annoying.
