If this is the case then according to this thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/58610/discussions/0/882964057650361440/
the steam version gets its avatar from steam itself so I'm not sure exactly the gog version works. your best bet would be to contact GOG support via email and see what they have to say about it. For a multiplayer title it would be an important feature so I cant see why they would remove it from the GOG version.
